Morning all, it’s been very cold overnight. Haven’t yet checked on the garden to see what the frost has done. Not sure I want to! 🫣 #skimmia #evergreen #autumn #ajoct22

The forecast gave 3 degrees here last night but there was no sign of a ground frost thank goodness. I hope your garden is ok 🤔💚❤️

It certainly was cold, although couldn’t see a frost just yet. I think I’ll have to move some plants this weekend ready for winter. Lovely skimmia!

Thank you 😊 Panic over! Think I’m fixated on temperature due to deciding when to start the dry storing process for my ensete! Fortunately no ground frost. Ensete okay too. Looks like we’re in for temperatures above 5 degrees for the next week, so that’s good! 😅 @pelly @richard.spicer.7906 @juliesgarden @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom

If it’s any consolation, my Ensete is still outside even after this week and looks fine too, although may be hating me after the last couple of cold nights 😂 - should be ok for alright for a couple of weeks now it’s warmed a little.

2w

Thanks Richard. As you can probably tell, this will be my first year seriously endeavouring to overwinter my Ensete. I did manage to over winter the “little stick” last year in my coldframe (surprisingly) not really knowing much about it. Now it’s grown to a decent size with a girth of over 60cm I’ve become seriously emotionally attached to it! 😂 @richard.spicer.7906

Keep changing my mind on the best option as I don’t have a greenhouse. Tending towards dry storing at the moment. Never watched the daily temperatures so much in all my life! 😅🤣 @richard.spicer.7906

No probs! I’ve had mine about 6 years now I think, it’s huge this year. I dry store it too, it lives in a pot, I then hack all the leaves off leaving just the trunk, and then move the pot to the garage where it stays in complete darkness till March/April time. I haven’t tried the shed before as I’m not sure it would be as insulated as the garage, but def wouldn’t keep it in coldframe or glasshouse as too risky.

I bought this when out with my Nan over 28 years ago Jane. I grew it in a pot for quite a while but it didn’t do very well. Since it was planted in the border it has really thrived and is quite a size now 😊 @pelly

4w

I originally had mine in the border but it got very sickly as my soil is wrong for it. It is growing, but very slowly 🙂

4w

I think I’ve been lucky. Mine is in a raised bed with 2 evergreen magnolia trees in it. The pieris I planted in the same border is massive. They must enjoy being cosy and cramped! @pelly
