Should this be cut right back after the summer?
If it is a group 1 you should prune this after it has flowered - late spring early summer. If not next year the bottom of the plant will be bare.

Hello jam again. Is that a Montana clematis ? Flowers April may? Pinky flowers? I never know when to cut back mine.
Honest answer is I am not sure! It does flower April/ May time. Last year I didn't cut it back and it was lovely this year X will leave it and see what happens next year. Has flowered this year and then had loads of new growth so won't be surprised if it either flowers again this year or is bigger and better next year.
