When I checked my garden this morning I found that some low life had visited my front garden and ripped out my standard "Soul Mate" that had been budding up beautifully. It seems a random steal as they did not have a spade to remove it properly - just ripped leaving a lot of roots behind. Not happy Jan 😪

New growth on the roses as they wake up from their winter sleep. I have treated them with a good spray of Confidor whether they needed it or not. This will give the new growth protection from chewing and sucking insects like aphids. After I finish mulching I will spray them for black spot and other fungus pests and then wait in anticipation for the flowers.

One of my garden tasks today was to identify scale attack on the roses after all the wet weather and high humidity we have had. This is a before and after treatment photo - spray with white oil to smother the scale then brush off the infection with a soft brush. My secret weapon is an everyday household dustpan brush that has got long soft bristles that can get around the thorns and tight areas without damaging the branches or new growth.

I have two Children's Roses both over six feet tall ripe for the picking today. I could fill a few vases with these and still have more buds coming. This is a wonderfull Rose if you have enough space. The flowers grow on long stems and have a beautiful perfume. Both bushes are growing well over the height of the fence and I have to bend the branches right over to be able to reach the roses to pick the blooms. One of my "must have" roses.

I have been growing roses for many years and have never had such devastation of my roses at this time of the year. I am usually standing guard over my roses on Valentine's Day protecting them from would be thieves. It will not be an issue this year as I would be lucky to get a vase full for myself. I saw on the news that America has a deluge of snow. It must be nice somewhere in the world. This has been a particularly savage summer which was predicted earlier in the year. Can't wait for Autumn!

We are drowning over here Jan in the West. Gone all winter like on us
The weather is crazy at the moment which will be a test to our gardening skills. The challenge is ...can we bring our gardens back to full glory? We have to adjust to too hot, too cold, too dry, too wet😠I will lose a couple of my weaker roses - shall we say the seasons will sort out the solid reliable plants which in the big picture is not a bad thing!
😕😱😣 think the weather has just gone weird all over the plants here don't know what season there in we've had Rhododendron flowering in December instead of April /may hopefully you will be able to restore your roses to there best @janmartin
My summer drought was really savage too. I feel for you. I lost some of my favorites. The plants that remain are much hardier. Keep your hopes up and 🙏 for rain! ❤
This weather is certainly testing our resolve Jan I lost one of my favourite roses yesterday. It was a standard and broke just off just below the graft. 😊
😪I have lost my "Alexander" Rose which was not growing that strongly to start with! This weather will definitely sort the weak from the strong 🤔
Jan I think that was the problem with my rose it was a standard and the stem it was grafted onto was never really strong so disappointing. I hope you had some of the rain we have had over the last few days. 😊
@errolly - yes, we have had some lovely rain and fortunately I was able to get some fertiliser and seasol into some of my Rose gardens and they are responding well. Sometimes I think it is nature's way of deleting the weak much like the animal kingdom.
Jan do you have a problem with scale if so how do you treat it. I have brushed it off but I think it needs something further. Hope you don't mind my asking. 😊

Crepuscule Climbing Rose - holding itself up between the frame. @dennisjglennen - this will give you an idea of what the horizontal stems will do at maturity. All the flowering stems grow from the leading stems. The Rose does not like the metal fence behind in the summer months as it conducts heat and sometimes suffers dieback. Current heatwave has not helped the flowering. I do not use any tie supports on this Rose now as it is strong enough to support on the timber frame.

I have just done a garden inspection to see how my roses fared in the intense heat and wind today ☀💨. Sadly I will be doing a lot of deadheading tomorrow as the weather took its toll. Whew! What a January ☀💨. We reached 39 degrees with a hot wind and up till now (7pm ) we have had a mere sprinkle of rain - so given the conditions the Peace Rose has hung in okay. Blue Moon Rose sadly in need of dead heading after suffering yesterday's heat wave. It was 41.5 degrees at 5 pm.
Ohh nasty, but I know what you mean. It is nearly as hot here in Ipswich. Hate the heat and humidity!!! Could you tell me how to 'dead head' correctly. Do you just pull off the petals or do you cut it back to last leaves?
When I dead head I cut back to the section of the stem that is going to produce more growth. Depending on the style of Rose - if it is a tall growing rose I might cut back a bit further to vase size if it keeps the Rose in better shape. Patio and miniature bush roses I will cut back only to where. I think it will sprout.

Anyone for deep fried rose petals. Speaking of which...do you ever add petals to your salads Jan ? I tried a rose, nasturtium and daylily with greens salad .... Yum.
No - I don't think my family would be across that idea but I do have a book about uses for rose petals including oils, drinks and decorating - interesting!
Thanks Jan. I'm on the right track. 😀👍🏻👋🏻 @janmartin
Haha Jan, I, me and only me tried the salad....the family were not impressed, actually horrified that I dared to present them with flowers in the salad.😱😭😳😵

Blue Moon Rose suffering in our current heat wave conditions (40 degrees forecast for tomorrow) I have this Rose growing as a climber.
I can imagine what a beautiful site it will be with a climber laden with these roses
What's your schedule for fertilization and spraying?
I sprayed the roses with Rose Shield before the forecast heat wave conditions - I will fertilize at the end of this month to get them ready for an Autumn flush of roses. @drumadxit
#rose-tip #rose-advice #rose #bluemoon #rose-heatwave #roseshield
What kind of fertilizer would you use?
@drumadixit - I am going to use Sudden Impact this time although I do vary from time to time.

Hi Jan I have just read your Rose Garden Story on GTers update and enjoyed it very much thank you for sharing. It is surprising where life leads us isn't it you certainly have some gorgeous roses.I dont know how you find the time to look after so many especially when you have so many other interests. I love travelling and had a quick look at your travel blog there is never enough time or money to go everywhere you would like to visit. Happy gardening Bev.
@errolly - thank you. I have a busy life but would not have it any other way😁
Hi Jan. I love roses too! I have had some die recently and when I have dug them up it looks like there are borer holes. Have you experienced this?
@dhawl1 - I have not had any evidence of borers. I lose roses more through die back or poor root system. I will investigate borers and get back to you if I find out anything useful.

"The Fairy" miniature Rose. Great for a border edge with plenty of room. It is a spreader and needs to be controlled as it will take root where a stem touches the ground and could be a problem if it spreads into an unwanted area as it is a strong grower. It has long branches that get smothered in flowers and are a good show. Another down side is they are very thorny and hard to work around for weeding. A positive is it does not mind how much it is cut back.

Hi @janmartin I was given a Mr Lincoln bud and it's taken all week to open but now it has wow it's really nice with a great perfume. Can you plant roses at this time of year?Cheers
@dennisjglennen Yes, roses can go in at any time. Best in the cooler weather when they don't get stressed. Soak the area that you are planting in so that it is muddy wet when your plant goes in. Roses love deep watering so their roots go right down and don't stay as surface roots getting small amounts of water.

Helmet Schmidt Rose - a well formed bloom of stunning yellow - long stems and not a lot of thorns. I have this growing as a bush rose.
Hi @janmartin just after some advice on cutting roses for a vase indoors how soon do you cut them I think I may leave them two late as they don't last very long maybe only a couple of days cheers
#helmetschmidt #yellowrose #longstems
#cutflowers-advice
@Dennisjglennan - the vase length depends on the holding quality of the Rose. Some open and fall immediately and others will last for a week or more. You can tell by how long they take to open from the bud. If they take days to open then the vase life should be good.
Cheers thank you @janmartin so you cut them just as they are opening up?
@dennisjglennen Yes - as long as the petals are unfolding they will be continue to a full flower.
Thank you 👍🌹 @janmartin

Sadly when I planted this rose I filed the tag in a safe place somewhere. It has grown into a lovely shape bush and the blooms are deep red. I am wondering if it may be the Gallipoli Centenary Rose because of it neat growth habit. I have another one potted and will compare when all the flowers come out.

White Iceberg standard Rose. Probably the most popular landscaping Rose because of its repeat flowering. In answer to the question "do standard roses always need support poles", in the early years definitely yes as the weight of the growth on the top and high winds are a problem. My iceberg no longer has supports as it is strong enough to hold itself. I have grown it in this exposed spot for about 15 years and it still produces a great show every year. Every garden should have at least one.

Brilliant Seduction Rose. This is the first year I have had this rose and it is budding well. Very similar to the normal pale pink Seduction Rose but much stronger pink colouring. I have this growing as a standard.
I'm new to gardening and have become interested in roses. I'm unsure of the characteristics when 'standard' rose is noted. Not sure if the definition. I've been planting by colour. Live in cold country - foothills of the Snowy Mountains. I've planted floribundas and hybrid teas & more. I know roses don't like wind, but can't avoid it here. I will try to plant some wind breaks.
A standard description means that the Rose has been grafted onto the top of a long stem that can vary in height as opposed to a bush rose that is grafted at the roots.
#brilliantseduction #pinkrose #rose #pink
Oh. Thank you Jan. Now I understand. I hear that standard roses are more susceptible to wind. I guess due to the height.
Yes, especially when they are young. I have a couple that do not need any support now as they are old and strong. In the past I have lost standards because they have snapped over in a storm because their support pole had rotted at ground level.

Wow you have some wonderful roses @janmartin #impressive can you please tell me the difference between standard and bush roses cheers
Bush roses sit at ground level with roses grafted at root level. Standards are grafted on the top of a long stem so the roses grow from the top of the stem which can vary from two to four feet in height effectively with the flowering being more formal looking than the bush roses. I love all varieties and don't favour one over the other.

Hi Jan, Katie @brightcolours put me on to you because I'm after some new climbing roses for a north facing wall (in London, UK) and one of them I am considering looks a bit like this: it's Claire Austin and has a strong myrrh fragrance. I'm also considering Mme Alfred Carriere and New Dawn. I'm after pale pink or white roses, preferably with big showy flowers. Are there any you'd recommend? 🌹
Susie, keep in mind that South facing in the Northern Hemisphere is North facing in the Southern Hemisphere. @susieg #advice-climber
Aaaah of course it is @brightcolours! Thank you! Never even thought! So Jan I'm after a climbing rose for a Uk north facing wall, or a south-facing one if you're in the Southern Hemisphere ie no direct sun. 😊
#@susieg advice. Susie I have had both Mme Alfred Carriere and New Dawn growing. Both are strong growers and good shows. Of the two I think Mme Alfred Carriere is the best show and the strongest grower. You will need plenty of space as they spread a long way. I had to take out Mme Alfred Carriere because it was growing too well and was all over the top of my husbands man cave (tool shed) and he was not happy. It was too high up to control. So make sure your space is right.
Thanks so much Jan this is really useful. My space is very long so I would be training it laterally rather than up. Do you think Mme A C would be OK with that? Or are there any other pale roses you have found to have grown well on a shady wall? Thanks again, Susie
All roses will want to grow towards the sun and are not shade lovers. If your wall is totally in the shade the roses may not flower well. They will flower where the sun hits them and will grow for that height. Lateral growing in the shade could be a problem.
Thanks for that Jan. Yes, that's what I suspected about roses in the shade. By the way, did my suggestion as to the identity of your mystery rose? It could be Claire Austin.
I have googled Claire Austin and compared the photo with the bush and I think it is identical in flower and petal shape so I think you are right. It is growing like a David Austin Rose with multiple flowers out now. Thanks for that info!😀👍
Pleasure Jan. Glad to be of service. Thanks for your advice too 🤗

Your roses are divine. I have looked through so many. What do you feed them with. I love roses but I am always struggling with them in the ground except my blue rose. I seem to have better luck in potted roses.

Regal miniature rose - good border display rose - repeat flowers
I have many miniature roses but have had them so long I have forgotten their names. Tequila is a repeat flowerer and beautiful sunset colours; I love Teddy Bear for its unusual brown colour; I will add them all to my profile when they are flowering. They would all grow well in pots but I prefer them as border plants.

Jan, I miss your beautiful rose photos. ❤️ Hope life is good for you.
I miss my beautiful roses too. We have down sized into an apartment so could not take any of my roses with me sadly. However I have succulents now and will post some photos of them.
I remember how sad you were about leaving that garden… 😢
