Hi Jean just wondering when and why you covered your strawberry patch. This year I've taken out my strawberry bed and am hoping to grow them in tomato bags on top of a fence. When I visited Bloom their strawberries were planted at a height with runners and berries hanging down. Last year we we over with runners and did not get a good view of some strawberries until they were over ripe. I'll take a photo when I have my platform set up. Fingers crossed it won't be blown away 😀
@bmob hi! I covered it in January, just so the new shoots would come up through it and keep the berries off the soil... just a tidy and clean thing. I like the idea of growing them up off the ground. I saw a clever thing the other day with 5" drain pipes cut in 4' lengths and stood on end with 2" holes cut into it for the plants. I'm going to give that a try!
Good morning Jean, I know exactly what you are talking about. Pinterest show some. This year I want to grow my strawberries from a height as well - so fruit and runners become trailing - more manageable and easier to control. Have bought growbags so just need to get my other half to help me build some form of shelf system😀😀😀
Embarrassing confession time: I only just worked out that this is why they're called Straw Berries! 🙄
The strawberries are under there ... gotta put some bird netting down to keep the straw from blowing away! @gjones
😂 not sure I'd ever thought about it either TBH
Me either! 😄 Straw is not used around me as they are grown in mass for profit, but I like knowing the name origins.🤓
Me neither Jean , susie @susieg 😳
