I did manage to get out to the garden this morning for an hour and gess what, it rained again 😣 we have had a couple of frosty mornings. Absolutely no rush on the seeds Kerry 😀 I've put the begonias away for the winter. I was surprised at the size of one of them, the one I call big yellow it must weigh around four kilograms 😊

@alan1111 I’m glad you managed to get a little time out there but the rain had to ruin it 😡 I couldn’t believe the size of those begonias! No wonder they flower like they do 😍

@gjones I’m so surprised you don’t have online stores like we do here! I love the end of season because they sell off excess stock so cheap. I’ve got so many great plants that way 😁

6w

@novicegardenlover I’d have felt awful ignoring such an offer 🤣

6w

kez001uk

@gjones I hadn’t considered the freezing winters killing off new plants. There’s a lot of planning required in your environment. Oh that’s a significant price when you’re buying multiple plants at a time 😨 seed makes so much more sense - and it’s so much more rewarding too ☺️

6w
comment
terrimclaughlin

@gjones so can you get seeds?? Or if we can get seeds tell me which ones and I’ll send you some👍🏻😊🤗🤗🎄😂

richard.spicer.7906

Also lovely 😊 - don’t prune this one the same way as the other two you have. This one is better pruned by just taking out the oldest stems from the base leaving a good structure above. Whereas the other two you have can (after they have settled in for about a year) be pruned fully down to 2/3 buds above soil level in late winter/early spring to encourage new growth for the next season

6w
comment
kez001uk

@richard.spicer.7906 thank you for the info, I’d have just chopped it back like the rest 🙈 is it true with cornus that they need pruning to ensure they stay colourful?

6w
comment
richard.spicer.7906

You get the best colours on younger stems, so they are typically grown and coppiced down to the ground every year to encourage new stems to form following season. I’ve left my ‘Kesselringii’ last year to grow without pruning just to ensure it settles in well, but will be cutting it back in feb/March down to the ground. Midwinter Fire is a cultivar from a slightly different species and does better if you just let it form naturally and prune out only the oldest stems each year.

@richard.spicer.7906 added to my notes 😛 thank you loads Rich. And Merry Christmas too 😁
