Managed to get a close up of the #broadbeans after the flooding with help of a few wooden bords so I didn't sink! and they are flowering despite everything they have been though... See how the grounds green and swopy 😦 Going to have to sow a few more not all of them made it but I'm impressed most did! After this winter we have had & the they have been frozen under water too.. 😮 #strongplants

@kimmy01 ahh you poor thing having floods. It’s not stopped raining ☔️ where I live and it’s sodden out there. They won’t be complaining of a drought this year if it carries on like this. The beans have certainly got some backbone to survive. Let’s hope they can gather themselves together and push on through. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼 that you have no more flooding. 🙏🏼

Not much I've done it all before @juliesgarden I've had enough... I've just been adding manure as its all un even. Next door said he wouldn't touch it while like that so I just stopped and made a start on the chicken run fence... I might send pics to the council

@kimmy01 is the soil clay? Maybe if you can dig in some grit and compost it may drain or you could dig a trench and fill it with gravel and make your own drain.

If this is a regular occurrence you might want to plan for raised beds? @kimmy01

We have a flooding problem because of a boulder clay subsoil. We have dug 4 trenches into subsoil so far and filled with gravel. Still get a lake for a garden at times like this.

Only when it snows and it happened a couple of times last summer when it rained and rained for days @Davidward

Yes its all clay @pixierose I'm adding loads of manure but its hard work to do it all lol and I'm almost out... I'll be getting a loaf more tomorrow or Friday but it will be no good till next year as its very fresh so on told. And full of hay. I'm trying to make my own compost as want to spend as little as possible on thinks like that.. I'm very make do and mend lol I have a idea for a drain now though hopefully it works but it will mean hard work with the sledge hammer on concrete

@kimmy01 keep persevering and your hard work 😓 will be rewarded. My Parents garden was all clay and had no drainage. Now he’s got a fab garden after keep adding manure and compost. He also made a drain running from the highest point of his garden to the lowest. Good luck 😉

Do these need protecting over winter? 🤔

7w

I always leave my autumn planted broad beans unprotected from the elements over winter with good results though it might depend where you are... we’re in Suffolk. The only problem is the slugs but some copper wire seems to eliminate most of that risk.
