To retain the high humidity during flowering, I've cut off the side of the drinks bottle to slide then buds through #cloche #cacti #cacus #flower #pink #chincactus
Do you measure the humidity in your home? @kyleleonard
Nope! I just mean inside the drinks bottle. The cold windowsill was killing the cacti, but this saved it from the mushy state it was just a few months ago @slj
👌📸👌💡👌
I've found that I have to keep humidity between 60% and 70% but anything over that effects the humans a bit. I seem to have found perfection in regulating it to now with the number of plants I have in each room it tends to sit at 65% the few plants that need humidity in the range of 80% have to live in the bathroom to attain the humidity they need. I think the kids get sick of me using the reason for baths being the plants need them to 😂 I always find it interesting that people who grow plants
Indoors don't tend to think about humidity when the average house sits at around 30% not much good for humans let alone plants
Cacti really don't like high humidity I've found. I think it was more likely moist soil rotting the roots that caused the mushy?
I had a cacti on my sister's windowsill which had a blind behind it so it was getting extremely hot and almost zero humidity and it loved it and flowered ha
I also keep one of my cacti outside and it seems to survive okay. I'll bring it in next month though I imagine when night time temps drop below 5ish
What a clever trick! I always thought cacti hated being in humid conditions.
@Soph1e - a lot of botanical gardens have really hot, humid conditions for their succulent/Cacti. The one in Munich was horrendous to go into

Nearly 🤞🏻#cactus #cacti #chincactus
@kyleleonard , did you do anything to get it to flower? I love cactus but mine never flowered , thanks!
@totallygarden - hello! Well, moved house last September and this year it's been pointing in a different direction on a cold windowsill - it was yellow and mushy in May, so I had to repot it - first I trimmed the roots, took it out of the pot and used cacti/succulent compost and topped it with horticulture grit. This all helped improve the general look of the plant, but using an old drinks bottle cut in half has really helped.. I kept it on for weeks at a time, watering when there was no visible
@totallygarden - humidity in the drinks bottle. Now I have three buds which could be the best we've ever had! And it's all grown a few inches in height and width. I really can't recommend using a cloche of some description. Has yours ever flowered?
@totallygarden - I don't use any special feed on any of my cacti as I once used a drip one on my bonsai and it still died.. so I just use old fashioned water.
Thank you so much!! @kyleleonard , I will give a cloche a go, I think that may be the best way and play with a different position! Nope, mine never flowered . But hope they will soon do!
Hopefully @totallygarden! Just put it on and leave it for a few weeks, I wanted to take it off but had to just leave it.. maybe the heat helped the roots grow better in the new soil

So this is the result of a lot of tlc. New soil, cloche on it for half the day to keep it nice and humid. I've actually noticed it has gotten taller since I began my exercise of trying to rescue it from the yellow, squiggy plant it was only a few months ago. Hoping the bud produces a flower and doesn't just fall off! #cactus #cacti
Looks really healthy, I see 2 more flower buds 🌞🌵🌞
Brill! Well done 👍🏼
Thanks guys 😀 @sieveheadsarah @rachelbrooks
Great job Kyle! 🌵

So a few months ago I posted about a squiggy, soft, yellow #chincactus which I thought was on its way out.. I changed the soil, added horticulture grit and even made a homemade cloche out of an old drinks bottle and now it's thriving! It's got its green colour back and really starting to fill out again 🤞🏻
Excellent
Wonderful #cactus-advice . Did you use the cloche to provide moisture in lieu of watering?
Well done good news
@lovestogarden - it faces a different direction to where we first lived when we bought it, always felt it's now in a cold position, but now with the cloche it gets so much warmer in the day and the heat is still there during the night instead of just constant cold
Great job of getting it back on track 👍🏼😀
Oh, thank you for the info. So glad it worked and it is happy now.
@totallygarden here's my cloche

#advice needed - my chin cactus seems to be yellow at the base of the plant - any clues why? It's on a windowsill (was kept on windowsill since we bought it) and I water it every few months... thanks!
Hello Kyle, from cactus plants that I have had in the past, almost no water through the winter months. They can take a surprising amount during the summer if enough drainage is provided. Also, it is normal for the base and older parts to get woody and brown coloured with age.
Thanks @opuntia! I can't remember how it looked last year.. might be the same as now
I have the same prob with one of mine. Watering weekly now, with a cactus feed. Blown away by the rate of growth/intake of water, now that there's more light/heat.
What you're describing is called corking and it's a normal part of cactus growth.
Thanks @alovealoe! It looks like it's shrinking too.. but feels firm when I touch it, not squiggy or anything. Should I just leave it be and hope it's ok?
Looks very dehydrated!
Should I water it @Alcurtis93?
I would. @alovealoe knows much more than i about cacti though. I water mine quite frequently as in well draining mixes and in a fairly hot room. Every 2-3 wks or so. Obviously not at all in winter as they're dormant
Watered and I'll keep an eye on it - soil was dry so hopefully it'll have a positive effect! Thanks @Alcurtis93!
I think it looks dehydrated too.
Thanks! @alovealoe can't remember when it was last watered so hopefully it'll show improvements

She's being annoying. She doesn't know GT exists so she's curious why someone would find my posts interesting! @stephent
Oh blimey! @kyleleonard

Good luck @kyleleonard on saving. What time scale do you have?
Probably a few years. My girlfriend and I have one each so hopefully won't take forever! Cheers @simon50!
Good on you!! 🏡

Good luck with the saving, healthy looking cacti 💚

Hello, @wilko! I've had this for 3 years now - first year it flowered with pink blooms. Any idea what it's called? Thank you!
@kyleleonard , I'm really not sure, think it maybe a hematocactus or a type of rebutia in I'm meeting up with some cacti friends in the next couple of weeks. I will let you know when I get a definite answer. Has this cactus not flowered since? Do you feed your cacti at all? I feed my cacti fortnightly with a weak mixture of tomato feed. This guarantees flowering and provides the cacti with all the nutrients they need. I only water from the beginning of May to Beginning of October.
@wilko - I've never fed them! And it didn't flower last year, probably why then! I'll look into buying some tomato feed this week. I buy cacti because I live a second storey apartment, but I tend my parents' garden. I have 3 big ones and 6 small ones, but nothing too unusual yet.
Lovely 🌵
@Soph1e this has been growing for about a year now, is it a pup? How would I take it off? 🤔 thank you! #cactus #chincactus
It is a pup. I'd unpot the whole plant and gently wiggle it back and forth to remove the pup. Don't be too forceful and try and get some root with it.
Thank you @Soph1e! Will keep you updated
Look forward to seeing how you get on @kyleleonard
@Soph1e I’ve been reading up - do you think I should let it callous? Or is that just for cuttings. Thanks again
It depends how much root you manage to get. I pot anything with a good root system up straight away. You can let it callus over, just don't give it a drink for a few days and it'll be fine either planted or resting on top of soil.
