Cornus have dazzling displays of Winter colour when positioned together in groups to catch the Winter sun in an open, light situation. The soil should not dry out and can even be waterlogged during Winter. Cut most varieties to ground level to encourage bright new stem growth in early Spring.
Yes, one of my fave winter plants, I recently planted midwinter fire and I am not regretting it- even if they are small still. I have a variegated leaved one with red stem too but wish I'd gone with the Siberica as much brighter red, never mind!
@titchyfra don't prune Cornus 'Midwinter Fire' or the variegated leaf Cornus 'Elgantissima' until their second year after planting as their growth is weaker, then coppice only every other year.
Thank you! I did that with the variegated ones (by fluke)as they've been in for 3 years now and they seemed so small and weak looking. Didn't know that about the midwinter fire which seem so much stronger looking only planted last September. #advice #cornus
One of my absolute favourite plants 👌🏼 and I'm glad to hear you say that about the Elegantissima as I don't do mine every year (can't always bear to cut it right back!) 😊

Beautiful example @mastergardener
