Yes. You *can* grow Rose of Sharon in Zone 5a. This is year 3. For winter protection, I place 3’ stakes around the shrub and wrap the frame with burlap. My boxwoods get a burlap wrap at the same time. All are thriving in southern exposure. (@laketitlow you had asked about this last year.)

I have this one! They're lovely. I'm in TN now but I know they're hardy into northern lower Michigan

Everything has been blooming about two weeks early all season. I don’t usually see Rose of Sharon till mid-August.

I thought mine were early this year, too

Can you grow those in Minnesota?

We’re on the edge of their range, so I’m trying them out in a semi-sheltered spot with partial sun. My garden is in a Zone 5a microclimate (hence my screen name) within a general Zone 4 area. Last year I overwintered two Rose of Sharon shrubs in a chicken-wire enclosure covered with burlap. One shrub survived, the other I replaced. Both look great now. Try it, @laketitlow , and let us know what happens! 👩🏻🌾

I would like a butterfly bush. I have been able to keep some blackberries and two paw paw trees.

Lou Ann, could you email me at kfootvanilla@yahoo.com with your mailing address? I would like to send you one of my ❤BeKind❤ signs!

@KariSamuel Thanks! Will do 😊

My first time growing Rose of Sharon. Our Garden Tags encyclopedia entry for this plant describes the flower color as “intense blue,” but mine are blooming pale lavender.

I love the color!
