I think the shrubby Echium is getting ready to flower 😲👏🏼👏🏼

Little polytunnel wander this morning, trying to mop up the excess condensation each morning as I go and open the doors to get the humidity down. Seems to be working slowly, was on 99% all day last week and now seems to be settling to around the 80s. Would like to get it lower into 70s ideally, that way I can worry less about fungus attacks ⛔️.

This Echium seems to be looking very well so far. I confess this particular one is not my original one from two years ago as I lost that to frosts. But it is a replacement from earlier in the year, bought at the same time as my other new Echiums. It’s getting very cold tomorrow so I’m gonna pop these in the shed overnight for the next two/three days to be safely sure. It has got to minus 2/3 a couple of nights and it’s been ok 🤞🏼 but not sure I’m ready to experiment with lower temps yet!

You have created a humidity level in Florida! Lol! It's a wonder we don't have fungus everywhere!

Lovely looking plants

I have echinum envy, great plant !

Lol! 😂 well now I just need the Florida temperatures too, and that would be set up for the year 😎 - it’s fun learning to live with a polytunnel, and get used to it’s little tricks @treefrog44

They are @kathy , I would really like to get one to flower but it’s been hard in previous years. Feeling optimistic this year 😄

Thanks Lisa! I adore them but just never been able to succeed with them. Really keeping my fingers crossed now I’m a bit more prepared @lisa868

They are looking great. I hope that all your hard work pays off in beautiful blooms!🌸🌺

Some plants just make us do a little dance, cartwheels, backflips and pull every trick out of our hat before blooming, dont they? Fingers crossed for you to succeed! 🤞

Hope so Kim, they are amazing to see in person. I’ve only seen them in Cornwall in the UK - which is not technically far away but they have a much milder winter usually than where I live. London also good for milder winters too, as it’s usually a couple of degrees warmer in the city @kimguy

Meanwhile, there's no stopping my #echiumcandicans , which seems to still be throwing out new foliage 😀 - it's been outside all winter but it's protected up against the house wall #wintergarden #echium #newgrowth

Looking very lush👌😎

Very healthy Richard 👍

Can't wait to see them in all their glory 😊

Morning, quite please with how my Echium is performing at the moment. I repotted this about 4 weeks ago and despite the cold spells it's looking quite healthy. It's grown well in its first year 😬 #echiumcandicans

Morning Rich looks super condition 👌

🕵🏻😉 Eye spy with my little eye 😂 well done you 👍 Did you start from seed? Another one to watch if you have long periods of frost cover with a fleece bag should be okay, just watch the wind though they sulk 😂

Thanks @Keely - still looking great today too. Just wondering how it will do over winter 🤔

Thanks again Steve. I think I'll move it to a more protected part of the garden for the winter.... and get some fleece soon! 😀👍🏼 @lamaisonbleueoleron

Ps - wasn't from seed unfortunately. I was a little impatient so decided to buy a small baby from a stand at a show last Easter. @lamaisonbleueoleron

Richard I could have brought one over with me if I had known !

😀 @lamaisonbleueoleron - Steve, thought I'd introduce you to my little Echium friend. Got him at the Knebworth flower show at the beginning of May. I potted him on before my holidays in a good gritty well draining soil and so far he looks very happy 👍🏼 #echiumcandicans

Hi Richard, looking good. #candicans is the same plant I've lost during the last wave of cold weather. I think it's more salt than cold that's finished then off. I'll wait a while before moving in case any new growth come through! 🙏😉 What size pot do you have it it? You'll need to pot it on before start of growing season, be gentle with the roots they don't like being disturbed to much. 🙈@richard.spicer.7906
Thankfully the Echiums seem ok, tips a bit squashed from the extra fleece but it will grow out. I think I can see flower buds forming too 🙏🏼😊
@angiecrazycatlady
Love this. Just wondering if I’d have the space for overwintering in just a coldframe or whether it needs heating in a greenhouse Richard?
#echium-overwinter
I’ve overwintered mine in an unheated greenhouse and it seems to be thriving! ☺️
Should be ok in either I think Angela, although they grow quite big eventually (this particular one is a shrubby one so might not fit in the coldframe after a couple of years). Would also be fine in an unheated greenhouse, I don’t heat mine but fleece it on cold nights if it’s going to be frosty or forecast below 0C @italydiva
Excellent! Hopefully you’ll get flowers this year too 🤞🏼 @Prettypotty
Ahh...yes, size. That be the limiting factor for me. I’ve only got a coldframe. No space for a greenhouse unfortunately. I do rather like it though. Maybe I could look at repurposing the summerhouse...I could maybe squeeze it in there over the winter? Hmm 🤔
Oh yes, that would be perfect Angela! As long as it has a bit of headroom it will be fine in there. It will take a while to get big anyway, this one must be about three years old now 👍🏼 @italydiva
