Interesting looking thing - is this a fruit?

Yes, @richard.spicer.7906. This tree is native to the Atlantic Forest and the fruit is much appreciated here. The fruits grow directly on the trunk and on the branches, filling almost the whole tree. The Sabará species takes about 10 years to start producing, but this is the hybrid one that is faster, although not so delicious like Sabará. I have planted 2 of them but will need to wait some more years...
