It got some kind of infection I think, so I cut it out a while back and put cinnamon on the wound to prevent further rot, but it has not thrived since then and I don't feel a firm little set of new baby leaves forming at the base. Maybe he'll pull through.. @cyndi

Oh noooo! 😳 What happened?

Not sure. There was a spreading spot of discoloration on the side and every day it got bigger. Another one got something similar and I left it alone to see what would happen and it's about dead now. So I decided to intervene with this one. I might have cut too deep, but live & learn. If I'm lucky it'll heal and grow new leaves this winter and be all better by spring. @KariSamuel

You did a good job even if it doesn’t make it, experimentation and attempts net gains no matter the outcome. I had a cacti i had to cut the top out of, and I (after letting it scab overnight) packed one of those silica packets used to keep moisture out of products, on the wound to keep it nice and dry. It worked, thought I’d share incase. Good luck! 🐶🍀

I'm not an expert, but this is the method I used last year, and it worked. (1) drape the parts you're not going to mess with -- I didn't want to accidentally pollinate the other bud in this pot. (2) slide the edge of an envelope under the petals and be ready to catch pollen. (3) snip snip 🙊 (4) into the envelope (5) envelope in Ziploc bag with silica gel packet (if you have one -- look in your shoe boxes) and then (6) Ziploc bag in fridge (not shown) -- #hopeitworks

@kylers haha, I'm more of a mad scientist than anything. I only cross pollinate within species, and since I didn't have another aucampiae with a flower, this one just had its flower and then the stalk dried up.

@kylers I had two that I think were both salicola, so I took pollen from one and pollinated the other, but I'm not 100% sure both were salicola, so the seeds will be mutts.

@kylers I think part of it has to do with size. The bigger they are, the more cells the baby plant has to grow. But also, these guys all live indoors, so they don't get any dew at night. That could also be part of it.

Kinda low-key freaking out a little over the vertical cleft down in there between the new baby leaves. The old flower stem is coming out from between that vertical cleft, which really should not be there at all, because new lithops leaves grow perpendicular to the previous set. The fact that there is a cleft in the same orientation as the top one means that there are TWO new baby heads in there!!!

@stephaniech this one flowered but was not pollinated. The stalk is like a tube without a bump in the end.

This #lithops-aucampiae always had a cleft in it since I got it. A FB acquaintance suggested that a lithops that has a split like this for months and months might be rotten, so I've been peeking and shining a light in there, trying to figure out what's going on. I'm trying to figure out whether my #lithops-aucampiae has been pollinated or not. I know I didn't (deliberately) pollinate it. In comparing the shape of the aucampiae flower stalk to the pollinated one on my #lithopssalicola I'm concluding that the aucampiae was not pollinated after all. The aucampiae hasn't reabsorbed much moisture from the stalk yet, but it's not as round and plump as the #pollinated one (salicola) at bottom-right. 19 Nov 2018

Totally normal. The new leaves in the center absorb the moisture from the outer leaves until they're brittle and crispy. That's how they can go so long without water. Like little recycling centers. @pixierose
