@heatherdirtyhands here's a comparison -- I know the plant in the other photo is pollinated because I put pollen on it from another salicola flower, but I can also tell by how round the top of the flower stalk has become. Unpollinated flower stalks stay narrow and dry out.

Salicola and aucampiae are grown in huge quantities by a wholesale grower in California (Altman Plants), so I see them constantly and then fail to appreciate them. So here's my high-tech custom #pollen-storage apparatus. The silica gel packets are from old shoe boxes and such. The lithops anthers and pollen are folded up in the paper and now stowed in my fridge. #pollen-harvesting #experiment #learning #alwayslearning #hopethisworks

Welp, I attempted to harvest some pollen. I hope I didn't knock it all off the flower -- a lot fell that I couldn't catch. I tried knocking it off with a toothpick onto a piece of paper. I tried picking up dropped pollen with a soft makeup brush. No luck. I eventually clipped off some anthers from each side and left the rest in place in case the other bud opens up in time. #lithops #livingstones #succulents #succulentflowers #succulentblooms #lithopssalicola #pollen-harvesting #experiment

I just Googled saving pollen and got a pretty good answer. Collect it, dry it and chill until use. Look it up for more detail.

But of course now as soon as I wake up I check to see who has liked my photos overnight. 😉 I write down in the notes the dates I water because if I don't keep track I'm sure I'll kill them all.

I cut the flaps off an empty cardboard cracker box and covered the printed side with aluminum foil. Couple pieces of tape hold the foil in place, and I used a bit of tape to stick the reflector onto the edge of the pots so it doesn't fall off the #windowsill #apartmentgarden #diy #reuse #recycle #repurpose

Some of my #homedepot #lithopssalicola are getting taller on one side and leaning toward the light. These two pots in the foreground and midground don't have aluminum-foil reflectors like the pots in the background do. This window gets a lot of sun from about 1pm to sunset, but apparently the shady sides of the lithops need some lovin'. Coming right up darlings.

@pixierose in the wild they're buried up to their necks with only the top windows showing. I just guessed with these. I think they look best when they're close to flush with the surface.

@pixierose watering is really tricky. It depends on what soil they're in, and what climate you live in. These guys are in a "soil" of 90% pumice and granite chips with a little bit of coconut coir and vermiculite mixed in. I've only had them about two weeks so I'll probably give them their first bit of water next week. In the wild sometimes most of the moisture they get is from mist and dew, so it's really hard to know in advance.

@pixierose I'm basically going to give them a good drench about once a month during spring and summer and after October I probably won't water again until next March.
