One lone bean pod on the #snailvine #corkscrewvine #vignacaracalla -- I noticed that the flower stalk is very fragile and they fall off the cluster at the slightest touch, so this is the only seed pod this year. Maybe the plants are too crowded or starved of nutrients because I have three of them in one pot.

In any case, we're probably going to have our first frost in zone 7 on Friday, so I'll have to cut the vines back before the pod is fully mature. Oh well, better luck next year. 28 Oct 2020 #grownfromseed #fromseed #growyourown #gyo

@cyndi @sushiwaitress we rarely get a freeze here, and if we do it just burns the leaves, it comes back from the root base. I would bring it inside or cover it with a blanket to protect it so the seed pod will develop more, even start cuttings if it's an option. Keep the section with the pod in water too. That will keep it viable as well.

How long are the vines? If they are not that tall they would be very nice twining around the base of climbing rose canes which tend to be kind of nekkid closer to the ground...

@emch it's hard to tell. I'd guess 5-6 feet. I grew them from seed this spring so the plant is young. The fence is about 3.5 feet tall (also a guess). I need to find something for them to climb on for next season.

@columbiariver I think so? This is the first year I'm growing it, and I have it in pots so I'm going to overwinter them in the basement. I've heard it called a "tender perennial" (not completely sure what that means). I think they don't tolerate freezing temperatures.

#svailvine is leafing out and has successfully been hardened off without dying. All plants have at least 2 clusters of three leaves. Some of the newest leaves are deformed a bit, and I'm seeing lots of little red chiggers ruining all over them, so I think I'll have to spray them with something. #advice welcome.
