This is #dahlia Scura, new to me this year. There are 3 of them here. They grow about 2 ft high and are covered in flowers which are a big favourite of the honey bees. In the middle is Verbena Rigida which I have dotted around the garden. Perhaps not the worlds greatest #colourcombo ! #red 24th Aug, 2019

Agreed @rachelbrooks the flowers are really just a bonus on top of the foliage. The flowers btw are about 2 ins across - probably the smallest dahlias I have grown but there are so many of them and this one is just getting into its stride so expecting a lot more.

@tombr I think the colour combo is magic. Had the verbena bin in with the foliage it would have struck hard, but I actually love it #ideas 🧚‍♂️🧘‍♂️👊👌👍😍

@dermot46 Slugs definitely a problem here too which is why I dig them up each year though they would survive outside. I then start them off in summerhouse and plant out when about a foot high at which point the slugs no longer interested- I suspect the stems too tough at that stage.

Interesting @Sephy I think actually it is the clash of foliage rather than flowers that doesn’t look right to me. Very different foliage on these dahlias

Ye the bright green is the only opposing idea within it ide say @tombr thinking about it now I might swap the verbena with a dark leaved dark blue lobelia in both tall perennial and annual bushy varietys. 🌌🌠
