When my granddaughter Rheya told me she planted a seed in this bucket I didn't believe her. She tells lots of stories...It's been set in the garden ignored until I just came across it again, I thought it was just a weed growing! Well it's a weed- #milkweed #greenthumb

Good for you! I have had mine for about a year and a half and see butterflies about, but not a single catterpiller. There's, I do want to ask if you know why my the catterpillers at my parent's garden have started hanging out on other plants besides their milkweed? Last year's they we're all over them. This year they have same plants, but catterpillers are on others.

7w

treefrog44

@lovestogarden the only reason monarchs leave the host plant is to pupate, the only other reason is it was somehow tainted with a pesticide, dogs or cats that are treated for worms or fleas can brush against the plants and taint them, possible over spray or dusting can carry in the air to the plant, even new plants brought in near them, if treated with a pesticide can taint milkweed... other than that it's a mystery?? @cyndi do you know why this is happening?

7w
comment
lovestogarden

Thank you so much Theresa and Cyndi. I know my parents have an abundance of wasp that also visit them, but I know spray is not an issue. As for mine, I am still unsure. I will just keep hoping for some caterpillars. @cyndi

comment
ofthought

Interesting discussion, as I thought I didn't have any special visitors because of new plants. Sigh, another issue, but thanks good to know. @cyndi @lovestogarden

Love how easy it is to root #milkweed in water! The monarch caterpillars can strip a plant in a week, I cut down the stalks put them in water. Voila more milkweed plants and the original will regrow as well :)
