It's starting to get below 50 on a consistent basis now but Harold isn't quite ready for "dormancy", which is typically December & January. I added a hook for him in a corner of my room that I think he'll really like.

Harold also has another fully formed pitcher. I think it's too late in the season for the other growing pitchers to fully firm before his hibernation phase... #pitcherplant #nepenthes

@blasome eeehhh, I'm pretty hands off. You can have them as an indoor plant but it depends on how cool you keep your house. They do best in Temps in the 70s/80s & they really like humidity so you would have to figure out how to make it humid enough for the plant (they don't like being misted/sprayed) either. You would have to put some sort of plate with rocks & water under it...

8w
comment
uaskigyrl

@blasome I live in zone 7 so I keep it outside under my tree. The only time I had issues was when the Temps got over 90F. He dropped his pitchers & didnt make more til the Temps dropped back down to the 80s

@juliesgarden I think it will really depend on what zone you live in. I'm in zone 7 in MD, USA. Todd is in SC, USA. We noticed that our plants wouldn't make pitchers in the middle of summer cuz it was too hot. Although, we live in zones that are humid enough

8w
comment
uaskigyrl

@juliesgarden they can be house plants but they prefer Temps in the 70s & they like LOTS of humidity. Some people put their plants over plates of water with river rocks so they get enough humidity. They also only take distilled or rain water

@blueheart it needs dappled sun or screened light & lots of humidity. If you live in a drier climate or colder climate it may be more difficult.

@uaskigyrl sounds like I might not be a good candidate. I thought it was a houseplant.

@blueheart it can be, you just have to be sure it gets some humidity

@toddbrandino hey Todd, maybe it's been too hot? All things have stayed the same on my end EXCEPT weather. Harold started making pitchers as soon as the temp dropped by 15-20 degrees 😃 #macro #nepenthes #pitcherplant

Do they hibernate?

8w
comment
uaskigyrl

@lovestogarden yes! Once the temp reaches before 50F at night I'll bring him in overnight & put him outside during the day. Once the temp reaches 50F during the day, I'll bring him in & keep him in the basement, watering only once a month or so. Pitcher plants need a dormant time or they will die from exhaustion.

8w
comment
lovestogarden

Wow. I did not that. Thank you for the information. Very interesting to learn about plants I have never grown. So dormant time lasts how long?

8w
comment
uaskigyrl

@lovestogarden i think in their natural habitat it's around 3 months. In MD, it'll be a bit longer. I've been coming up with a plan for this winter...hopefully it works!

Mines in full shade & seems happy but a lot of his pitchers dried up too. I added an extra source of water under him for more humidity & he's doing much better. I can upload a pic when I get home.

8w

@toddbrandino i actually had to move mine from his original spot cuz he was in a spot that had a little bit of sunlight but some of his top leaves got sunburned...so now he gets no direct sunlight at all

Unfortunately i dont have a spot like that just partial shade the leaves dont burn and its producing huge leaves the pitchers just arent getting big yet
