Progress on the #musa-basjoo flower. Will I get inedible bananas from it ?
- Late Summer 2021
- 26
#musa-basjoo has the beginnings of a flower forming #monocarpic Plenty of decent size pups in the clump to take its place though when it dies
Wow Well done , lost mine when I moved !
Or not such a well done 🤣 @juliesgarden the only positive to a stem flowering and then dying, will it be one less to wrap and it’s the biggest so I struggle a bit with this one
- Early Summer 2019

#Musa-basjoo is loving the heat then the showers... Its a whopper this year #foliagefriday
Wow so tropical 🏝
Wow, that's huge 💚💚
Thank you @sharonhayden and @pelly I'm waiting for the other different types of bananas to go mad. With this current rain and forecast heatwave it's going to get interesting 😂
Wow they are enormous @vec
I love them, even torn and tattered after the wind yesterday 😍 @suerichards
- Early Summer 2018

Huge leaves and huge pups this year #musa-basjoo 💚💚💚

Really good @vec how are you lovely?
Not bad thank you @wesleybrian Was going to say I haven't seen much of you on here but I have so little time to browse nowadays that I've been missing lots of posts
Wow tha5s fabulous , wish I hadn’t lost all mine 😢

Shredded banana and honeysuckle blown off the fence. This weather can do one now thank you very much
😱😱 Oh Julie @vec I have a pic of that looking lovely, agree with you about the weather it’s soul destroying for the plants 🤬 I take it it will recover & grow more leaves? It was so awful this morning I didn’t bother coming to your manor stayed in Braintree & did shopping just didn’t want to be out in it. Sending you a big hug 🤗😘
Oh yes it will grow more leaves. I'm just sulking 😂😂😂 @jadojado29
Oh no Julie it was looking so lovely horrendous weather for you hope it clears up tonight 😕
Feel for you ,it heart breaking when something you love get ruin in this weather, but your garden lovely xx

Musa basjoos all unwrapped and looking good. I tried the bubblewrap method this year with straw in the crowns and it appears to have worked ☺
great job keeping a banana go through this winter...
Yay!! 👏👏 mine is green so I know it's fine too 😁😁
Lost mine 😢😢
Wow that's amazing with this winter will be alot hardier now I would have thought 👏👍😊
@juliesgarden musa basjoo is root hardy. It will be back ☺
No it won’t , was rotten 😫😫😫
Have you dug it up ? @juliesgarden
Even if the stem was complete rotten mush, it should reshoot @juliesgarden
Yes it was completely rotten Julie , the cold winds and the ice we had was just too much I think , went on for weeks and it’s very salty air here , only about 5 mins from seafront . Never mind I’ll try again 👍
I'm really shocked by that @juliesgarden 😢😢😢 If I hadn't lost last year's pups, I'd have sent you one. They just weren't big enough to survive 😐
Aww bless you ☺️😘😘

Shredded banana 😢
😱😔
@dinyar This is last week
Wow!!! It looks so tropics (jungle like- in a good sense). Are these not called Cavendish? Musa is supposed to be from Sikkim/Darjeeling area -quite cold region. The British during the British Raj time used to move to Darjeeling and other northern regions during hot summers as the temps go over 104 in lower regions.

Morning all. Looks like it's going to be a lovely day for working outside #musa-basjoo and #cannas enjoying the sun 🌞
Do you leave your bananas out in winter, or dig them up and bring them in @vec?
The musa basjoos I leave out but wrap them up with fleece, straw and a protective waterproof cap. I will bring in the red bananas as they will not tolerate freezing roots @halfy21
That’s great, thanks for the info Julie @vec

#signsofautumn getting lots of torn leaves now it's autumnal and breezy #musa-basjoo #tallerthanme
Oh don't we hate it when Autumn spoils things 😕leaves everywhere plants being blown about or worse from the 💨 boo!

Morning all, except for a shredded banana leaf or two and a dangling dahlia flower, we've no real damage here although the wind seems to be picking up a bit #musa-basjoo
Morning Julie ........I'm very surprised and happy to say the damage here was limited to a couple of fallen garden ornaments only :))
Morning Julie loving your banana 😍👌😉
Morning @flof1952 and @porto 🖑
Morning Julie shame about the banana leaves but glad your garden didn't suffer to much damage 😘
😲 hope it survives OK Julie @vec it's a Gorgeous plant 😍 hope you have a lovely day 😚
Morning @daisy-jane and @jadojado29 It will be fine Suzie. I'm having a lazy wind down day ahead of going away on Friday 😉
Where are you gallivanting off to on Friday Julie @vec 😚
North Devon @jadojado29 ☺
Sounds nice Julie @vec hope the weather is kind to you then the following Sunday 1st I'm away😚

Just before we lost today's light, it stopped raining and I swear my banana has grown by at least a foot since this morning🍌🍌🍌
That is incredible. It's wonderful. Well done Julie. I am soooooo envious 👌😍👍💜🍌
I wish I was brave enough to attempt detaching the babies. Got 5 on this one, 4 of them are a decent size @jeatacake
Maybe try just one for now? Are you bringing it in for winter or leaving it out all wrapped up? If digging it up, that might be the best time to remove the babies? If I lived nearer I'd be offering to adopt one! 😁🍌
If you lived nearer @jeatacake I'd let you detach one 😂
It hasn't had it's feed for a couple of weeks @LyndaClack must remember to do that today ☺
Cheers Julie. Not quite a surgical operation, but a very sharp knife slicing carefully down the side of the mother plant's stem, to detach an offset with at least a little bit of root should do the trick.👍

One of my tallest in the border #banana #talltuesday
Looks great ❤ How old is it ?
Coming up for a year @teng.rigby It loves tomato feed 😉
Very cool
Only a year :O do you keep it outside all the time?
Yes @kimmy01 I covered it up over winter last year with fleece and straw and a protective plastic cap to stop the top rotting ☺
Its amazing thanks tagging me in the winter one, mines been in the conservatory since I got it in May
Did you trim it before wrapping?
Yes take off the leaves and cut a bit of the stem @dinyar
Do you use the leaves in cooking? It is has antibiotic properties and gives off a divine aroma in Fish, Rice, etc. wrap fish in it and steam. In India on auspicious occasions food is served on banana leaves instead of plates. It adds nice aroma and works as a natural protector/ antimicrobial.
When you are eating outdoors place a leaf on the table and no insect will come.
Well I didn't know that @dinyar but I don't like to take the leaves off when they're growing
- Early Summer 2017

#musa-basjoo The new leaf is ginormous 💚
Make a great umbrella Julie @vec we could both fit under it by the look of things 😂☔😘
Amazing plant Julie 👍

@jadojado29 what a mess it looks but hopefully a bit of leaf protection from the gale 😂😂😂
It's a nightmare!!! 😡😡😡
You've done the right thing @vec
😂 put it this way Julie @vec don't think I would ask you to put my arm in a sling 😂 joking aside who cares what it looks like if it does the job this wind is awful just watching my Wisteria at the front getting battered but it is up against the porch so should be ok fingers, crossed 😘
Haha @jadojado29 I'm first aid trained in humans not blooming awkward bananas in a force 10 gale 😂😂😂 It is a nightmare @hayleyaj and @Cazx wish I'd done it earlier
Looks quite fetching tho! 👻 #banana 😂😂👏👏
Hope it works 😊😊😊
Ooh, just noticed your metal spiral thingies, where did you get them from?? Hope your banana survives the night 😀👍🏼
@sieveheadsarah I bought them years ago from a local eBay seller who was selling the bird bath I have now. I've no idea where they came from originally sorry. Think I've got 8 of them scattered around the garden for support for climbers ☺
Great idea 👍
Better safe than sorry 👍
Oh dear Julie hope it's going to be ok looking cosy now 👌😘

Wind damage on my beloved banana @jadojado29 and @pelly The leaf to the left has snapped 😢😢😢 Am hoping the next curled up leaf that was coming through is only bent and not snapped through
I hope so too Julie 😪😪😪
Don't know if there's anything I can do to protect what's left @pelly
Wish I could help, is there any way you can stake it till the wind dies down? 🤔🤔🤔
😢😢
Awwww😱 Julie @vec feel for you 😢😠 the only thing I can think.of is some sort of support all round it which you could remove at a later date hope the other leaf is only bent and comes back 😘
😞 Feel for you
@jadojado29 that leaf is snapped unfortunately. Don't you just love our weather 😬 off to find some canes and fleece. I've got another 3 bananas but they are in more sheltered position and not as tall as this one. I'm sure in a few weeks I'll have lots of leaves sprouted ☺
@vec it will bounce back in no time, It's a tuff plant.
Hope it'll be ok! 🤞🏼👍🏼

My bigger banana is growing too #musabasjoo Really thought I'd lost this. I'm sure in a couple of weeks it will look like a proper banana tree again 🍌 #new-growth
Nice one 👏👍
I'm so pleased Jeff, really thought it had gone when I unwrapped it ❤ @jeatacake
I'm so pleased for you Jules as I know how I would have felt too 😊👍
@dinyar this is what it looked like when I unwrapped it at the end of April
Thats not bad. I can see a green shoot coming out. Very nice. Do you get the bananas?
I haven't but I've read about rare cases in the UK where bananas have grown. It's really not hot enough here for them to fruit @dinyar
Have you tried any fertilizers?
Yes I use tomato food @dinyar
Funny. I use Tomato fertilizer for Chili Peppers. Any fruit you like to make them plump.

All wrapped up ☺ Cut off the leaves and a bit of extra stem Stapled a big piece of fleece together to make a tube shape, stuffed with lots of straw. Covered it with thin waterproof canvas type stuff (actually it is a bike cover from poundland for £1 ) so the top doesn't rot and voila hopefully a preserved banana for next year ☺
Night night nana 🍌😂
I'll draw on some eyes, stick on a carrot and wrap around a scarf if it snows @juliesgarden #readymadesnowman 😂😂😂
😂😂😂 don't use the S word !!
@juliesgarden 😁😁😁
Looks nice and snug
☃☃☃☃☃ @juliesgarden
Have to put mine (6)in the shed, boxed in 2ft bark mulch, fingers crossed for next year.😩
Just the right shape for a baby ⛄️ look forward to when it snows then. Or maybe not ...
Good work! And love the ⛄️ idea 😂😂😂
Good thing you have its soooo cold out there tonight just fetched the washing in brrrrr
Love it ☃️☃️☃️☃️☃️

Good morning gt'ers. I know that massive leaf will flop when its fully opened but it's higher than the 6ft fence at present ☺ #banana
👀👀👀 wow!
Good morning Julie 🙋🏻
It's a hungry monster @drewneil 😂😂😂
Morning @yodamama 🖐
That's bananas! 🙈🙊😂🍌 very lush and tropical looking! 🌴 @vec
Morning Julie looking fab 👍😁 cana nearly there update laters 🙌
@vec it's fab, I always wanted a banana plant bur I don't think it will thrive here. Do you take it in over winter
Good morning Julie @vec I love your banana plant it's very impressive. At least we had the rain here but I don't think there was much thunder I heard a grumble but that was in the distance don't think it reached here. Hope you have a lovely Friday and if working manage to stay dry ☔️😘
It all looks beautiful Julie 😍
Morning and thank you @rachelbrooks @Keely @katgreen @jadojado29 and @wesleybrian This is my first year of having a banana Kat but I will be leaving it in the ground wrapped up well. Suzie, if we had any thunder, I slept right through. It was just a bit damp outside when I woke up ☺
Fabulous plant 👏👏💕

My kids are amazed at the growth so are measuring the leaves. The biggest leaf yesterday was 29" it's 34" today 😁
Yikes Julie @vec carry on like that it's going to be massive lovely though 😍
Crikey! It obviously likes all that manure you dug in! @vec
Looks a happy plant🤗
Thank you ladies @jadojado29 @rachelbrooks and @godfreye All that backbreaking digging was so worth it. It does get frequent feeding too ☺
- Late Summer 2016

I couldn't get it all in but this leaf is huge. My hand is on the bottom of the leaf ☺
I love big leaves, so beautiful ❤
😍
If those are the leaves, I wonder how big the bananas are!
Oh wow well done Julie 😍😍👍
- Late Summer 2016
- 32
Happy banana. Really can't work out why one is looking glorious and one so poorly
Have you planted yours outside? I might leave mine until next spring 😅
Yes @tn89uk my new borders are about 80% manure so thought I'd risk it ☺
I've been babying mine lol I think I'll leave it in the conservatory for this winter 😂 keep me updated though, interested in how you get on. Fingers crossed 😊
I've been saving bubble wrap for winter protection, got enough hort fleece, just need something to wrap around all of that to keep them dry @tn89uk
Yeah not a bad idea! I might try some hay too when I come to put mine out 😊
I've got lots of hay and straw here for the rabbits. Am sure they won't mind me pinching some @tn89uk I used the straw for the cannas last year and they all survived ☺
You have cannas outside too?! Might have to look into this because yours are beautiful! Would love to add it to my collection 😏👍
Left mine outside last winter covered it in mulch seems OK. @tn89uk
Did you cut it down and/or cover it up ? @sandraescapes
Might wait til next year before I put mine out Julie , she's still a baby 😂😂
@vec It just died back. And I put a very deep. Layer of mulch over it. It is under the shelter of a tree and next to a wall facing south.
I do believe these are the start of inedible bananas 😀 #musa-basjoo Someone on here told me it wouldn’t produce bananas but the comment has disappeared so here’s a photo that says otherwise 😉
Wow looks like you have a lovely bunch of Bananas growing. Brilliant 🍌🍌🍌👏👏👏😘
Wait, inedible bananas?
@emch apparently these are very bitter, seedy and most unpleasant to eat. I only grow them for the tropical look. First time in 5 years that any of my clumps have flowered. It’s #monocarpic so this stem will die after flowering/fruiting
Well, OK then
Wow that's incredible Julie!💘😍
Oh fantastic.. edible or not!!
