I’ve decided to bite the bullet and uncover the bananas. They’ve been pushing up the covers the last few weeks. This is my biggest and original one. Reckon it’s about 9ft now without the leaves #musa-basjoo

I’ve had my cosmos in for a week now they were nearly growing out of their pots...maybe just keep an eye on the night temperatures...👌🏼🍌

@wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom unless we get prolonged freezing they should be ok now. Need to start hardening off everything I’ve got growing from seed indoors now. Every windowsill is occupied 😄

Banana leaf shredded into ribbons, one leaf has had most of the ribbons stripped off and is just a stalk... This how they are in their natural environment #musa-basjoo #wind-damage

It will grow new leaves for a few weeks yet... Not the end of the world, I've seen some devastated tropical coastal gardens today, I count myself quite lucky as its only really the bananas and a dahlia that are damaged @keely and @suerichards

Next year I will wrap the echium up with as much straw as the bananas. You live and learn @jeatacake 🤔

I have 2 Abyssinian banana seedlings which will probably stay in the house this winter, until they are big enough to plant out, maybe next summer? I used bubble wrap on the long stems & fleece over the top part where the leaves were & even then they only just made it! 😐

I lost my ensete maurelli red banana too @jeatacake Have got a replacement already though which is going great guns on the kitchen window sill ☺

8w
comment
jeatacake

Is that a slightly hardier one? Hope you wrap it up really well this winter or bring it indoors. 👍

8w
comment
vec

The maurelli isn't as hardy as musa basjoo. I was half expecting to lose it @jeatacake

You will have to do a "Monty Don" & dig it up for winter!

Do you have to overwinter it inside Julie?

8w
comment
vec

I'm going to mulch it with horse manure, wrap it up with horticultural fleece straw and some kind of sack and pray lol @clustyroen My garden is going to look odd for a few months as I've got 3 bananas and a couple of other tender plants to protect

8w
comment
dbligh

Did your original plant produce flower/fruit apparantly they only produce 1 batch and then die but they produce a baby plant at the same time #nature is amazing 🌱👍

8w
comment
vec

No @dbligh no fruit. Once the baby started growing, it just started looking poorly, stopped growing and went black

8w
comment
jeatacake

A big clear glass or plastic container to put over it would work well, like say an old fish tank or drawer out if a fridge etc?

8w
comment
dbligh

Fingers crossed the baby flourishes my banana has developed a baby too without flowering it's still looking good but it's only small aprox 4 feet I wonder if mines on a downward spiral ☺🍌🌱

Great idea, but don't think I have anything big enough Jeff @jeatacake ... will have to ask my parents, they save anything and everything "just in case"😁

@jeatacake I haven't forgotten about you. Looks like the other banana has a baby growing ☺

8w
comment
jeatacake

Lol! I'm sure you hadn't! Is potting it up & bringing it indoors/under glass not an option? I have 2 large echiums to wrap up for winter in fleece or bubble wrap. Did have 3 but one's died already 😢

If you ever wondered what the stalk looks like when you cut down a banana plant. Here it is 🍌. The baby is growing well but the leaves on the mother plant were black and dying so I've taken them off and cut it down

Unhappy banana but has a pup growing. No idea why it's looking so unhealthy unless it's shocked by the transplant. It's in the same soil as my other banana which looks great

8w

I don't know when to take that pup off. I'm new to bananas @wesleybrian

8w

On the smaller of the two musa's I have this odd looking shoot which isn't touching the ground. Am asking the resident banana growers that I can think of, is it a sucker ? Would it be advisable to build the soil up to it so it can root. It's a couple of cm's off the ground. I have planted this at the depth it was in the pot. @lamaisonbleueoleron @BillyB @seaniceman @mikethegardener @Garyg

Hi vec, none of my bananas have ever done this so not sure, but I would agree with Steve , cover it over with compost and see what it does ..but at some stage would it need to be separated from mummy banana ?,it's very similar to my agave which shoots out little babies and I cut them off to propagate !
