I’ve decided to bite the bullet and uncover the bananas. They’ve been pushing up the covers the last few weeks. This is my biggest and original one. Reckon it’s about 9ft now without the leaves #musa-basjoo

I’ve had my cosmos in for a week now they were nearly growing out of their pots...maybe just keep an eye on the night temperatures...👌🏼🍌

@wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom unless we get prolonged freezing they should be ok now. Need to start hardening off everything I’ve got growing from seed indoors now. Every windowsill is occupied 😄

Banana leaf shredded into ribbons, one leaf has had most of the ribbons stripped off and is just a stalk... This how they are in their natural environment #musa-basjoo #wind-damage

Oh noooo will it still survive guess they are used to tropical storms 😕😕😡

What a shame, but hopefully it will be ok 👌

It will grow new leaves for a few weeks yet... Not the end of the world, I've seen some devastated tropical coastal gardens today, I count myself quite lucky as its only really the bananas and a dahlia that are damaged @keely and @suerichards

Oh noooo 🤦🏼♀️ I’m so gutted for you

Already a new roller about to open up @Cazx It will be fine 😉

Broken leaf banana 😢

No 😐

It's had a lot to put up with recently 😕

This was the one that died all of a sudden last year and it's the pup that took it's mothers place. I know I'll be cutting and wrapping soon so its not that bitter a pill to swallow @jeatacake and @tina

I always liked them

It's grown really well & as you say, no big deal that it's got a bit tatty now 👍

My smallest banana is putting on growth #new-growth

Morning all, it's not much to look at but at least one #banana has survived the winter in its jacket. The bigger one I'm not so sure about yet but it has babies growing 😍

#newgrowth

Glad to see your banana made it through winter 👍😊👏

Next year I will wrap the echium up with as much straw as the bananas. You live and learn @jeatacake 🤔

I have 2 Abyssinian banana seedlings which will probably stay in the house this winter, until they are big enough to plant out, maybe next summer? I used bubble wrap on the long stems & fleece over the top part where the leaves were & even then they only just made it! 😐

I lost my ensete maurelli red banana too @jeatacake Have got a replacement already though which is going great guns on the kitchen window sill ☺

Is that a slightly hardier one? Hope you wrap it up really well this winter or bring it indoors. 👍

The maurelli isn't as hardy as musa basjoo. I was half expecting to lose it @jeatacake

You will have to do a "Monty Don" & dig it up for winter!

The baby banana that sprouted seems to be doing well considering it was attached to a dying mother plant ☺

Woop woop looking alot better now 😄😄
Do you have to overwinter it inside Julie?

I'm going to mulch it with horse manure, wrap it up with horticultural fleece straw and some kind of sack and pray lol @clustyroen My garden is going to look odd for a few months as I've got 3 bananas and a couple of other tender plants to protect

Did your original plant produce flower/fruit apparantly they only produce 1 batch and then die but they produce a baby plant at the same time #nature is amazing 🌱👍

No @dbligh no fruit. Once the baby started growing, it just started looking poorly, stopped growing and went black

A big clear glass or plastic container to put over it would work well, like say an old fish tank or drawer out if a fridge etc?

Fingers crossed the baby flourishes my banana has developed a baby too without flowering it's still looking good but it's only small aprox 4 feet I wonder if mines on a downward spiral ☺🍌🌱
Julie, Jeff made a good suggestion I think 👏

Great idea, but don't think I have anything big enough Jeff @jeatacake ... will have to ask my parents, they save anything and everything "just in case"😁

@jeatacake I haven't forgotten about you. Looks like the other banana has a baby growing ☺

Lol! I'm sure you hadn't! Is potting it up & bringing it indoors/under glass not an option? I have 2 large echiums to wrap up for winter in fleece or bubble wrap. Did have 3 but one's died already 😢

If you ever wondered what the stalk looks like when you cut down a banana plant. Here it is 🍌. The baby is growing well but the leaves on the mother plant were black and dying so I've taken them off and cut it down

Looks to me like it was rotting from the inside out 😯

Bananas in Essex! 👀

Good luck

Unhappy banana but has a pup growing. No idea why it's looking so unhealthy unless it's shocked by the transplant. It's in the same soil as my other banana which looks great

Could be transplant yeah, I think some plants are just not strong in general aswell 😔

I don't know when to take that pup off. I'm new to bananas @wesleybrian

I know the pups should be at least a foot tall because any smaller it won't have enough root on it 😉

Funnily enough, I've just been reading the exact same thing 😁 @wesleybrian

😋 I had to read it up because of the Golden Lotus Banana I've got 👌

Might add that to my wishlist @wesleybrian 😍

It flowers for 250 days then gives you loads of babies when it dies 😆😆😆😆 I've got about 7 babies on mine and they're getting big so I'll expect the flower next year I think

I've got a dwarf cavendish banana Julie , actually produces fruit even here if conditions are right so fingers crossed 👍🍌🍌

@juliesgarden do you have it indoors? I'd love to have one 😍

It is at the moment Wesley , I'm not going to put it out until next year , hopefully should be big enough then , I'm in SE Kent so were generally warmer than most of the U.K. And it's frost hardy to -5 so fingers crossed , good luck with yours 👍😍 @wesleybrian

Fantastic! You've done really well with it 👏👏👏👍🍌

On the smaller of the two musa's I have this odd looking shoot which isn't touching the ground. Am asking the resident banana growers that I can think of, is it a sucker ? Would it be advisable to build the soil up to it so it can root. It's a couple of cm's off the ground. I have planted this at the depth it was in the pot. @lamaisonbleueoleron @BillyB @seaniceman @mikethegardener @Garyg

@drnicko

Julie, I would cover it over myself, other may have different ideas. I also noticed smaller shoot lower right of the photo 🕵🏻 needs covering over🤔😉

Thanks Steve @lamaisonbleueoleron Had a Google first but couldn't find anything specific. Am I sad that I'm excited that it could make a new plant ? I've promised @jeatacake he could have one if I do 😀

Hi vec, none of my bananas have ever done this so not sure, but I would agree with Steve , cover it over with compost and see what it does ..but at some stage would it need to be separated from mummy banana ?,it's very similar to my agave which shoots out little babies and I cut them off to propagate !

Thanks Sean @seaniceman

No probs vec

@vec Give over! Not sad at all. The thought of a little banana plant is like Christmas coming early! 😁🍌🎅

Julie, I still get excited, I wouldn't worry, I agree with Jeff, @jeatacake I would be chuffed #happy-plant 👍😉

@vec I agree with Steve, cover it over and let it grow a bit. I took four pups off mine this year but need to let them develop a bit of root first.

Thanks @Garyg

Wow 😍

Couldn't help myself at the gc. It was on #vecswishlist after seeing it on here #banana #musa #basjoo

It does matter where we go a gc pulls me in ;)

First of many?

Probably @Garyg Want to have a tropical looking area when I start planting 😍 but I'm a bit of a mix and match gardener, love some of the cottage garden plants and acers. Think the cannas and palms will go well with this though

@vec I got a banana plant a couple of weeks ago & posted pic but my banana is teeny weeny in comparison to yours. Interesting to see how you get on. At least my one will be easier to lug in for winter. 😉😂😂

@angipangi This was teeny weeny compared to the £49 monsters they had in wyevales 😉

@vec always wanted a banana plant but don't think I will get away with it in my garden. I'm like you though and like to mix and match, I have palms and cannas, I think your banana will fit in perfectly 😆

Hoping the phormiums will go with it too @katgreen
