What a sad sight 🙁 Took off 3ft of dead stem yesterday. I’ve cut it to just above a new leaf forming. My other one is the same #tetrapanax @Leonplantaddict how is yours ?
😭.. mine are t much better hun !
#newgrowth looks promising though.
Sorry to see that Julie ☹️,they’re certainly tough though, mine grew back well that time it broke off. Just going to post a pic of mine from today.
I didn’t know you had a tetrapanax @juliesgarden
I haven’t…..I saw the cabbage palm hun … 😂😂😂
@juliesgarden 😂😂😂

I haven’t got this far with the #tetrapanax before. I normally get frost whilst the flowers are in a tight bud

Now monty mentioned this on gardeners world last night, prices will rocket due to supply and demand. Glad mine produces pups and have several growing on nicely in greenhouse 🤣 #tetrapanax #mammoth-leaves
Love that 💚

#tetrapanax-papyrifera-rex on the move again. Looked promising in April then frosts really set them back
@Leonplantaddict Think mine are a bit behind yours
It’s all coming good now isn’t it 💚💚💚
At last @pelly It’s been a long time coming
Looking fab Julie!💘😍
Yes bit behind but not much & they look very healthy! How many have you got? If I had room I would definitely have another.
There’s 2 in that bed plus the pups I keep potting up and 2 others that should put on some decent growth this year. They’ve been hiding behind other plants in the back of borders for the last 2 years but looking healthy @Leonplantaddict
@vec that’s the annoying thing I don’t get any pups! I’m always looking,but it’s a busy border. 🙄
Have an accidental dig around near the roots. I disturbed them when I dug a hole to put a palm in. They pop up all over now 🤣 @Leonplantaddict
@vec I thought about trying that but I’m too much of a wimp lol! 😂 Plus it’s a crowded border! 🙄

#tetrapanax flower buds, doubt they'll open but it's a first for me @Leroybe Have you had them in flower ?
Nothing much this year, but mine almost flowered last year,I tagged you on last years photo. 👍🏻
Did you find your leaves went single rather than multiple pointed as mine did before the buds emerged @Leroybe I'm sure there's a more technical term for what I described 😁
To be honest I can’t say I noticed anything different about the leaves last year, this year it doesn’t look like mine got anywhere near flowering, probably because of the poor weather.

What a fabulous photo 💚💚💚👏
OMG That looks fabulous!
Thank you @suerichards and @lilybee
My daughter has just bought a small one of these. Do they grow quickly and do you have any advice on keeping it happy 😊
They won't do much for the first year until they get their roots spread out in the ground, I wrapped a bit of fleece around it and put a plastic cloche over the top for the beast of the east and its grown well from then on. They won't do well in a pot and will more than likely die off in winter if left in one outside @angiecrazycatlady
What about if we pot it up now (garden hasn't been landscaped yet) then put the pot in the shed or house over winter then plant it in the ground next spring. She bought a banana that's supposed to be hardy but was wondering if we should do the same with that whilst it's young 😊
They'll need to be completely frost free if in pots. I lost my first t-rex in a pot over winter in the shed. Even a root hardy musa basjoo will struggle if the pot freezes. They'll be fine indoors as long as they're away from a direct heat source @angiecrazycatlady
Wow stunning beauty!

Another monster on the move, standing at around 4ft so we've lost no height over winter #tetrapanax
Your garden is coming alive Julie 👍😍
The jungle is slowly waking up. Going to change a few more things around this year so it's out with some plants and features that aren't working @pelly
Oh intriguing, I can't wait to see what you are doing 😊😊
All will be revealed in due course @pelly 😁

Love these extra large #green leaves on #tetrapanax 💚
Love this plant and it’s name 😍
It's a monster plant @flowerseed but I love all 3 of mine 😂
Yep I can definitely say it’s a monster Bestie @vec can’t believe how much it grows each time I come round Fabulous plant 💚😍😘
All looking really lush Julie @vec
We'll have to squeeze in another get together before you disappear for a while @jadojado29
Yep no problem Bestie @vec mind you I’ll have to squeeze past that ‘Tetrapanax’ first 😂😉 will be in touch 👌😘

#tetrapanax #foliagefriday I love this giant of a plant 💚
That’s a beast of a leaf 😮👌🏼
It's an absolute monster @richard.spicer.7906 I've got 3 of them spread around 😃
Love these 💚 I'm defo going to add one to my garden
First year, it won't do much @daisy-jane They spend the first year spreading their roots out Then after that .... boom they're off 😂
Don't buy one and leave it in a pot over winter @daisy-jane They are not hardy in a pot (speaking from experience 😉) I put in two last year probably around this time of year and I put a plastic bell cloche over it to get it through the beast.... It did the trick 🙂
I was thinking of getting one early next year Hun after I will rearranged the whole of my big border 🙄 thanks for the tip too Hun 😘👍
What conditions do you have yours in Hun just so I can refer to your comments cause I've wishlisted this post 😁👍
Two in full sun and one in partial shade @daisy-jane @Leroybe has a fab one in his garden that's alot bigger than mine
Fab thanks Julie 👍 I'll be on the lookout for one in the GC
I have one of these too but mines more of a silver green, it’s in part shade, are they more green in the sun? Or am I not feeding it right?! I only put it in at the beginning of the year and it’s got new shoots ....
I'm not sure I know the answer to that @seamuggle @Leroybe Can you help seamuggle please

You have got such an amazing garden I’m so jealous of your jungle garden I absolutely love it 😍
Afternoon Julie, loving your broad leaved plants, they look so lush 😄 @vec
I saw this at hever castle and just purchased one online! I love it!!!! 💚
@dan5584 It won't do alot this year now as the roots need to settle but next year you will be rewarded with some big leaves. They are root hardy in the ground but not in a pot so get it in the ground asap. Allegedly if you accidently sever a root whilst planting around it, you may get pups 😉 @Leroybe has a badboy t-rex 😂😂😂
Thank you @flowerseed and @gosmanalf
@vec will definitely be going in the ground! Excited about next year already 😂😂😂😂😂

It's so hard to show how big this leaf is so I've measured it ..... 2ft span 😮😮😮 😍😍😍 #tetrapanax
😂 your neighbours are going to think you have lost the plot Julie @vec measuring leaves 😂😍💚😘
They can't see in past the bamboo now @jadojado29 😂😂😂
@vex looking good! That’s a great leaf span, not measured mine might have to now! 😍🤔
Holy moly!!
Holy moly indeed 😂😂😂 @rachelbrooks I've got 3 of them 💚💚💚
Yes go and and measure it @Leroybe Don't let me be the only idiot on GT 😂😂😂
@vec you’re not the only idiot! Already measured lol! About 30” 🤔😂😂
Impressive. The men in white coats are coming to take us away @Leroybe 😂😂😂
@vec they can take me away.....but I’ll always be an idiot who loves a big leaf! 😂🤣😂
😂😂😂 @Leroybe

@Leroybe This is it's 2nd year in my garden . Leaves are huge but no more than a foot off the ground #tetrapanax
@vec the leaves are looking great! The height will soon come! 💚😊👍🏻
I've got 3 of them all about the same size ... one day it will look like a proper jungle 😂 @Leroybe
@vec look forward to seeing those pics......love a jungle lol 🤣😁

The biggest leaf so far is the size of my hand. This hopefully will grow really big this year #tetrapanax

I hope so @Leroybe 😁

I've been clearing out and cutting down and can now see how much growth one of my #tetrapanax has put on since May. Not as much as I would have liked but it's going in the right direction 💚
Mine is still smallish & in a pot. Will plant it out next spring when I've decided where it can fit! 😁
I've been creating lots of space today @jeatacake Lots of plants have been given the chop. Ive been quite ruthless 😮 but my garden looks a bit bare in places now. Mostly perennials that have gone over. Discovered a few plants that were hidden and a few weeds 🙄
I always find ones I"d forgotten about when I have a major clear up. Need to do one soon, to dig up half hardies I want to keep for next year.
I haven't started digging anything up yet. There's a job for a whole free weekend 😂 Weather permitting, the new path is going in next weekend. Got all the materials ready and waiting. Can't wait to get those stepping stone paving slabs out of the middle of my grass ☺ @jeatacake
Just got to keep any eye on the weather now. If frost is forecast at short notice, the best I can do is get all the tender plants in pots into the greenhouse. I take it that you're not too struck on stepping stones in the lawn! 😁
I didnt even know they were there until after I'd moved in and started clearing the garden and they have sunk alot. I'm going to reuse them in a little patio in front of the summer house. The path will be shingle and stepping stones but it will curve around the new border rather than in the middle of the lawn and they'll be closer together so I don't have to take large steps and it will mean I can widen the original border without it looking like I have no grass 😂 @jeatacake
There is a red brick block paved path down the back garden where I am, but you'd never have known as the previous owners had let the grass grow completely over it.
- Early Autumn 2017
- 35
Now I've cleared alot of the borders of plants that have gone over, I can see more of the jungly plants that will hopefully start to take over #tetrapanax Have bought some tropical babies to add to the mix for next year. Colocasia pink china and an Ethiopian banana ☺
Those sound fabulous Julie. Love colocasia 💕👌

#hidden-gems #tetrapanax 💚
Looking good.
It's taking its time to get going @Garyg I read up on it and it says it will go mad once the roots have settled. I've got 2 in so hoping at least one if them does 💚
@vec I've got two, thinking of getting another, work in an exotic plant nursery so I'm like a kid in a sweet shop on pay day.
Omg that would be heaven for me @Garyg
@pottybird42 this is a t rex ☺
@vec... It's a cutting from my cuz.... It's a tree type plant, a handkerchief ...... I think.... 🙄

I'm quite disappointed with the lack of growth on these. I've got two and they're not growing. I was expecting a couple of foot in growth already. Maybe they don't like my conditions #tetrapanax #advice

T rex x 2 sheltering indoors until this cold weather has passed ☺
Its going to be a big one then with a name like that 😀
Wow !!
Wonderful 😍
I'm hoping to have it hiding the side of the summer house so hope it does grow big @janric @juliesgarden and @sabbanrula I'm planning to have lots of my more tender plants that side of the garden protected from the north wind. I've lost a few plants over winter that I've had for years and can only think that a cold northerly wind has got them. It's all trial and error this gardening lark eh ?
That's definitely true Julie 😇 ours is eastern wind and it is devastating to most plants so I have to choose them well for the front garden but the back garden is more hidden and cool so I put the delicates there 😁🌱
Definitely trial and error 😂

Ooh look what just turned up in the post. Very well wrapped bargain and in fab condition from Ebay. A baby #tetrapanax
Would never have thought of using eBay to source plants! Don't these grow rather large?
They do eventually Ian @bigemrg 😁 This is the first live plant I've bought from Ebay that wasn't a local pick up
I have to say I've bought a few plants from eBay Julie and Ian , although they tend to be smaller , they are much better packaged than some of the big companies !!! @vec @bigemrg
👍 Nice one! Looks good & about same size as mine 👌
From a dead looking stick after winter to this so far. Have a few pups popping up too 😀 Nothing happening with the cabbage palm to the left though. I’ve planted a climbing black eyed Susan which will hopefully grow up it until it decides what it’s going to do #tetrapanax
I got a cutting last year and it has survived the winter and is starting to put up some leaves 🤞
I saw a@post that said about cutting the trunk down a bit and it will throw out new shoots Julie x
@juliesgarden are you talking about the cabbage palm ? I thought I’d leave it a while and see if it shot from anywhere. I’ve seen some cut down near us that aren’t doing anything. Not giving up on quite yet but no shoots from the ground either (I look daily lol)
Oh yes , I’ve done it again 🤣🤣🤣
You crack me up @juliesgarden 🤣🤣🤣
Losing the plot 🤣🤣🤣
