Bulbine Lily in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Bulbine bulbosa syn. Bulbinopsis bulbosa

Bulbine Lily

B. bulbosa grows in dense colonies. It reaches up to 75cm tall and has succulent, greyish green leaves. The fragrant, star-shaped yellow flowers are borne on long vertical flowering stalks. Each flower has six tepals with tufted, hairy, yellow sepals and only lasts for one day, but the flowering head may bloom for some weeks. Few garden varieties have been developed, however. The plant can be propagated from seeds or by division of the corm.

Planting young plants

From Early Spring TO Late Summer

Plant from spring through summer in well-drained, compost-enriched soil. It needs a fairly light soil and is not suited to heavy clay. It can also be planted in containers in a normal succulent soil mix. Spreads quickly by rhizomes.
