Dutch Rush in the GardenTags plant encyclopedia

Equisetum Hyemale syn. Equisetum Japonica

Dutch Rush

Equisetum is something of a living fossil being the only living genus in Equisetaceae, a family of vascular plants, that reproduce by spores rather than by seeds. The stems are ridged, jointed and hollow with cone-like tips that bear the spores. 'Equisetum is a native to Britain, sometimes known as Equisetum japonica. It is a marginal plant resembling bamboo, with black banding between segments in the stems. It is evergreen even in the hardest weather and provides winter interest to the pond. It spreads by underground stems, but is slow-growing and will not take over the pond. Very hardy, grows 500 miles inside the Artic circle. Aquatic plant, maximum depth 15cm

Planting

From Early Spring TO Mid Spring

This can be an invasive plant, so care needs to be taken where it is planted. It is also water-loving, so may need a lot of watering. Plant in full sun, if possible.
