Marrubium vulgare
White Horehound
Horehound is a bushy perennial herb, known mainly for its medicinal qualities, but it can also be used as a food source. As a food source it should be eaten in small quantities, and not on a regular basis, as large consumption can cause medical problems. The plant has crinkled leaves that have a bitter small when crushed, and which grow on quadrangular stems. White nettle-like flowers grow in spires any time from late Spring to mid Autumn, depending on the location.

Flowering
From Early Summer TO Mid Autumn
White hermaphrodite (having both male and female organs) flowers are positioned in the leaf-axels - nettle-like, from early Summer to early / mid Autumn.. Flowers do not appear on the plant until the second or third year of growth and blooms anywhere between April and October. The flowers are pollinated by bees
Propagating by seed
From Early Spring TO Mid Spring
Sow seeds in a pot or tray filled with proprietary seed-sowing compost, or a 50/50 mix of multi-purpose compost and perlite or coarse grit. Sow large seeds with space between the seeds, and sow small seeds thinly, and cover the seeds with a thin layer of sieved compost (unless it is a type of seed that needs light to germinate). Water gently with a fine rose on the watering-can, allowing excess water to drain away.
Planting
From Mid Spring TO Late Spring
When seedlings are big enough to handle, and after last frosts, plant out into a sunny site (horehound cannot grow in shade,) in moist but free-draining soil. Water to establish the plant
