Propagation by seed
From Early Spring TO Late Winter
Sow seeds at anytime of year, in a well drained seed compost, just covering the seed. Leave uncovered as light is beneficial to germination. They should germinate in 25 - 60 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Grow on in a cold frame and plant out the following spring in full sun 30cm apart.
Planting young plants
From Early Spring TO Early Spring
Prefers a sheltered sunny site and a moist, well drained soil. This tree can quickly grow to a large size thus plenty of room should be given. Its important to stake young plants as they will grow quickly and can suffer wind damage if unstaked whilst the roots are not yet firm enough. The purpose of the stakes is to anchor the roots. Flexing in the wind, higher up the trunk, is not necessarily a problem if the roots are firm.
