Plectranthus are warm-climate plants occurring largely in the southern hemisphere. Closely related to Solenostemon, they are commonly called spurflowers. They can be grown in a cool greenhouse or conservatory or outdoors in baskets, pots or in sunny borders. The foliage is often ornamental and the flowers are small but are often borne in good-size racemes in shades of purple, pink, white, or blue. P. ecklonii is an attractive and popular garden plant. Mass planting of the white cultivar is quite striking when mixed with the pink and blue shades.

Plectranthus needs well-drained soil of moderate fertility in dappled shade. Most species are not hardy and will not survive outdoors in temporate regions. If grown indoors, provide full light but with protection from hot sun. Water freely and fertilise monthly during active growth, but keep just moist in winter.
Propagation
From Early Spring TO Late Winter
Divide in spring, or take stem-tip cuttings any time. Rooted branches of trailing species can be removed. To grow from seed, sow ripe seed at 66° to 75°F.
