Tulips are spring-blooming perennials that grow from bulbs, between 10 cms. and 70 cms., depending on the variety. Tulips have a single flowering stem, with strap-shaped leaves at ground level. The flowers are usually goblet-shaped, or star-shaped, with 3 petals and 3 sepals, in a wide range of colours, except blue (tulips with "blue" in their name are more violet, than blue) Tulipa turkestanica is a dwarf tulip with up to 12 star-shaped flowers on each stem. The flowers are yellow with white inside, and pink and green outside. It is a very early flowering variety.

Tulip flowers appear from late winter through to late spring depending upon the variety. Tulip flowers come in a wide variety of colors, except pure blue (several tulips with "blue" in the name have a faint violet hue).
