When I'm not on my bike, you'll find me in my organic-ish garden in #Cumbria. Favourite plants? Wisteria, hellebores, peonies, philadelphus...
This is the last #heather thatched house in #northumberland Turf is laid first, upside down, then the heather, then right way up turves along the ridge. It’s on the Roman Road leading to Vindolanda, just below Hadrian’s Wall and is wonderful 💜
Fascinating- never knew heart was used - but I suppose local resources are always used
Apparently it was very common until slate became affordable at the turn of the last century @sharonhayden
I wonder how often that needs replacing Jacqueline 🤔
If you want to know any more about it it is all here: https://www.landmarktrust.org.uk/Search-and-Book/properties/causeway-house-5837/
It’s said that it can last for decades but this is replaced every 20 years 💪@sieveheadsarah
I just googled heather thatched roof for a little info and guess which picture showed up first? 👆
😂🤣 It’s really interesting though isn’t it @lesliecole49
Just reread my message- heather not heart!!! And it lasts for years - thatch - straw has to be replaced more frequently
Oh wow, you can even stop there, how amazing would that be 👍😍
Don’t worry Sharon, I had worked that out 👍 @sharonhayden
It was Jane! 😉 @pelly
