28 March 2018 • This is even worse than the Portuguese laurel, which it is next to but probably twice the size. This time I don’t know what it is either, so please help me identify this plant and tell me what to do about it! Yours, desperate of Cumbria #plantid #advice #plantadvice #beastfromtheeast

@awomanonabike the lead looks really similar to the bush I’ve just put on my page.

It does look similar doesn’t it Christine but I’m sure it’s not a daphne. Pity as the perfume would be divine. It’s as big as a tree and the leaves aren’t as thick as a daphne but thanks for the suggestion @pixierose

I should add that the leaves aren’t as thick and waxy as a cherry/English laurel (P. Laurocerasus) either...

They do look very similar Barbara (I have a bay too) but these are bigger and a bit shinier and not quite as stiff... Also they have no smell at all, sadly @jacaranda

It does look a lot like our bay. The older leaves don’t tend to be very fragrant and the younger leaves are much more so. Even so they require a lot of crushing to be able to smell them, but when they are put into boiling water the smell comes out much more.

I have a bay tree too and It does look very similar doesn’t it Gaby? Thanks but the leaves on this are softer and more flexible than the bay. It is so like the Portugal laurel though, it’s just like its big sister 🌳🌳🌳 @atomica
