Portugal Laurel

The Portuguese Laurel, Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia, is an excellent hedging plant. It has dark foliage and dark red stems and, in Spring, white, fragrant flowers which are attractive to insects, and which are followed by red berries that turn black, and are attractive to birds.

Planting young plants

From Late Autumn TO Late Winter

Plant Prunus lusitanica rootballed plants in the dormant season, in a sheltered position where the tree will get plenty of sunshine. Dig a large hole, and put a good amount of organic material in the bottom of the hole to help with drainage. Container-grown plants (those grown in a pot) can be planted at any time of year. Those planted in the growing season (March to October) will have to be watered more than those planted in the late autumn, winter or early spring.
