@fuschia I couldn't for a while but then I started covering them when they were growing and once they had formed a base they seemed to flourish. I have seen a trick of planting a pot level with the soil with beer or cider in it close to plants as it attracts the snails and they can't get out that could be worth a try ? Or buy a plastic covering ( I used cut in half water bottles at first ).
@catloc7 the beer tip works well for us, we cleared our garden of every snail and slug around last year and doing the same again this, especially round the lupins which are a favourite of both...
