Clematis montana 'Rubens'

My #clematis-montana-rubens is doing amazingly, only for me to over hear my neighbours saying the trees are comming down. Perfect and about time, but surely it's the wrong time. Knowing the Mrs. She will just rip them out regardless of my clematis. What should I do please? Help??

Cut the clematis hard back to two feet above ground seems terribly drastic but it will come again from really old wood. That will give you chance to put up a fence and you can train it up that. I know from sad experience

Thank you @joanboston. It is already over a fence and the trees the other side, died last year. Let's just say she wouldn't listen to me when I said they were to close to my fence when she planted them. My clematis just goes over all of it. Would cutting it back to the fence height after flowering be enough do you think?
