Does anyone know if I can pick these #seeds yet? Not sure what they’re supposed to look like. #japanesemaple #seedsaving
I picked mine off at this stage, just make sure they get good and dry.💘😍
@ShelleySnyder thank you!! I was worried if I left them longer they’d blow away. 💕
If you leave them they will eventually blow away! So if you want them better be taking them soon!😁💘😍

That is cool I did not know they would come up from seed I love love love Japanese maples
@ladeebug I get several volunteer seedlings in spring, just never tried growing them from seed before. 😊
The Japanese red maple, growing in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 through 8, reaches up to 25 feet high with a canopy that can spread up to 20 feet wide.
Japanese red maple seeds have a hard protective outer coating that, in natural conditions, may delay germination for up to two years. If you plan to grow your tree from seed, it is helpful to prepare the seed with a process called #stratification.
Remove the papery wing attached to the seed, then store the seed in a dry paper bag at room temperature over the winter.
Remove the seeds from the bag about 100 days before your planting date. The ideal planting time is in early spring after your area's last frost date. #sowindoors February 15th (stratification begins)
Put the seeds in a heat-proof container and pour hot water over them. The water temperature should be no higher than 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow the maple seeds to #soak for at least 24 hours or up to two days.
Drain the water and place the seeds in a plastic bag filled with potting soil, sand or peat. Moisten the mixture with a small amount of water. Poke a few small holes in the bag to allow for air circulation.
Put the bag of seeds in the refrigerator for approximately 100 days. This stratification process breaks down the seed coats and prepares them for germination. When you remove the seeds, you may see small roots growing from the tips, indicating that the seeds have begun to germinate. #stratification
Fill 4-inch pots with potting mix and sow the seeds on the surface of the soil. Cover seeds with three-eighths inch of soil. Water the seeds until the soil feels moist. Let the soil dry out before watering again to prevent rotting. Watch for seedling emergence with one to two weeks. When seedlings emerge, provide light shade to prevent burning. #germination 1-2 weeks
@jennlamaye that is awesome thank you for sharing that I have a small Japanese maple ( coral bark ) in my front yard but over the years I've owned quite a few

Not happy. I don't know what's happening to my #japanesemaple
Have you got a porcupine in the area? It almost looks eaten
@lesliecole49 it's so odd. I don't think we do. And if we do, they are climbing three feet up the trunk. 😳
Squirrels sometime do this if they find the sap tasty. But that looks pretty bad. You may want to chat/talk to an arborist about wrapping etc while it heals. Good luck.
@leaskp1 good idea. I contacted the extension office to see if the master gardeners can figure it out. It looks pretty bad and cutting out that branch means losing a significant portion of the tree. 😞
I hope it can be saved. Looks like much of the bark is in tact. I have a false cypress in my new zen garden that has two trunks and one has died. Just planted 3 months ago. So I know the feeling of losing a large portion of a tree. Very sad. Again good luck with yours. 🍀
Thank you @leaskp1 and @cyndi 💕
@leaskp1 I trim up plants and trees and can see what they'll look like after I'm done. When you have to cut off a large portion it just makes everything look weird. Lopsided. I hope yours recovers nicely. Thank you.
They will climb, not saying that it's a porky, but they do climb. 🐖

I'm worried about my Japanese Maple. 🍁 Something seems to be attacking it. #advice
Beavers? Raccoons? Squirrels? Possum? How high on the trunk? It almost appears to be an antler rub by a deer... 🤔
About three feet up @KariSamuel which is why I'm so confused. Thankfully, no 🦌 in my yard (but if they only knew!) Squirrels, possible. But what are they (it?) doing to it. I'm wondering if termites attack live trees. Or ants?? Seriously. Who knows. Sent pictures to the master gardeners at the college extension office. 😕
I have one and squirrels don't bother mine for what it's worth.
