Newly planted #MrLincoln standard rose. First flower. I have heard that I should be snipping off all the buds on my four recently planted standard roses so that all the growth goes into establishing the roots. Comments welcome. I am a newbie to gardening so just learning about such things. @janmartin @deekay @brightcolours @errolly @sue1953 @carol13450 @susieg @plants #misterlincoln
I'm sorry Bronwyn, I don't know enough about Roses to help you. When I have planted container roses before, I have not done this...with no worries. Bare rooted roses might be different??? Good luck. 😊👍🏻
I've not had standard roses just climbers and shrub roses. Haven't done that with them. The person who should be able to give expert advice on this is @janmartin
Yes @carol14350. Good point. I live in a cold climate but we still have hot summers. It would probably be better to try to move them a bit further from the wall now - rather than later. Unless I painted a dark figure behind each rose bush! A silhouette.
I do plan to mulch soon. I'll be hooking up a trailer and going to a big mulch pile by the side of the road about 5 kms away. Plan to mulch everything once I have completed all my weeding. @brightcolours

I noticed your flowers are very close to the metal wall. Will they get too much radiated heat? This might be a concern? 🤔☀️
I have not done this but I am no expert.

Makes sense to me as it's similar advice as citrus: remove all buds (lemons) in the first year of growth.
Thanks @brightcolours I'm going to find it difficult to be brutal! I'm so enjoying the first flowers. Maybe the next buds have to go. Yikes.
I'd recommend mulching to help cope with your weather extremes.

Perhaps prune some but not all buds as a compromise?
