I bought some bare roots of a Tropaeolum - which I understand is quite difficult to establish. I've started it off quite deep in a pot - roots need to be kept quite cool, moist and in the shade and will then scramble through to reach sun. Fingers crossed!
Will then plant out near the base of the hedge out of the sun once taken off. Planted 6th March.
Oh, I forgot that using an ericaceous mix 👍🏼
Do they come in other colours?
You can get other types of Tropaeolum - there are those which have tuber (tuberosum) and I've got 'Ken Aslet' - I bought it a tuber from a nursery stand at the RHS london show, so giving that one a go to. Nice burnt orange red yellowish trumpet flowers, quite a different flower shape to this one which is more open @lamaisonbleueoleron
I think they are from the same family as nasturtiums 🤔
Thanks Richard I'll have a read later garden duties first 😎
It's apparently grows rampantly in the right spot but unfortunately for most of us we are in the wrong spot!
Yes, that's what I keep reading. Grows well in Scotland apparently. I'll give it a go, I've nothing much to lose other than a couple of pounds. i think i will be pleased if I can get it going.
@tiggrx
Hope it grows well
And look what else I found? Double chuffed that these are coming through!! 😁 Another climber. The roots like to be kept cool and deep apparently so best to plant at the base of a shady moist spot and let the shoots scramble up into a sunny position. A lot of people successfully grow this one through hedges, but I've noted I must not let it dry out 👍🏼
Similar conditions to clematis Rich. Look forward to seeing how it grows. They're amazing plants @richard.spicer.7906 😊
I have one of these growing through hedging @richard.spicer.7906. I don't pay it any attention, except to admire it when it's in flower. Lovely plant 💗
Ah cheers Mike - that sounds about right. I lost the webpage that I did some research on a few weeks back. I'll make sure I'll keep you all posted 😁 @mikethegardener
That's encouraging to hear @bevkb - I don't know anyone that has grown it and that sounds like how I was going to try it so fingers crossed! Does all the growth die back each year?
Bought mine about 10 years ago and a couple of times I thought I had lost it, but it had only died back. It gets better with each passing year, you will need to be patient with it. But oh my it is worth it @richard.spicer.7906 😃
Excited, I can't wait @bevkb - I can be patient 😉👍🏼 you'll have to post a pic of yours when it gets going.
Will do @richard.spicer.7906 👍
