The deer ripped off a 2-foot stick of scion wood from the Susquehanna pawpaw, so in an attempt to make lemonade from lemons, I grafted a piece of it into a #seedling #pawpaw I had in a pot. I'm keeping it indoors now to try and trick it into making some new growth, thereby preserving this variety for the future. It's an #experiment. 29 Sep 2024 #alwayslearning #hopehopehope

The deer 🦌 have been the bane of my existence this year! 2 are definitely going in my freezer! Good luck with your experiment

We have a pawtastrophe 😭 -- a stupid, stupid buck broke them all! And I can't actually blame him because this is a thing that bucks do, and this is why people put barriers around their trees. The trees were FINE all last fall and unbothered all year and I forgot about the danger. 26 Sep 2024 #pawpaw #asiminatriloba #deer #damage #grafted

My Dr. Chill #pawpaw #graft is peeking out a tiny green point. We've had unseasonably cool (delightful!) weather these past two weeks, which isn't great for #grafting. Grafts need temperatures in the 80's to heal, so I wasn't holding out much hope. And when I went to check on them today, ta daaaaaaaa! 24 Aug 2024 #grafted #graftyourown

A deer got into the fenced backyard last night because the gate was left open. It munched off most of my #purslane. I was MAD. Then tonight when I was watering, I looked at the pot again and noticed some new baby #pawpaw #seedlings tucked in there among the purslane. This makes me so happy because I put about a hundred pawpaw seeds in this pot and then they didn't make it through the winter so I felt like a failure and a waster of precious pawpaw seeds. But some have LIVED! yaaaaaaaaay!

Time will tell whether this was a good decision or not. The two trunks branch off at such an acute angle that water could collect there and rot the wood. With a heavy load of fruit, it's possible that the two trunks will split apart someday. Hopefully they'll stay long enough that I can collect more scion before that happens. 10 Aug 2024

At this year's #backyardfruitgrowers grafting workshop one of the experienced growers told me that he always tries to keep the tip of a piece of scion intact whenever possible, because the terminal bud has a lot of growth hormone in it and will make the plant do well. I decided to try it, but the tip of the stick was too thin for the rootstock, so I grafted further down and ended up with 7 or 8 buds above the graft.
![comment comment](/profile/sushiwaitress/images/150/profile_image_103424.jpeg)
Wasn't sure if that many buds above a graft is a good thing or not -- I was taught to use only 2 or 3 -- but it was already pushing leaves before I had a chance to ask anyone about it. 28 June 2024 #native #nativeplant #edible #ediblelandscaping #grafted #graftyourown #backyardfruitgrowers #byfg #tedweeden

![comment comment](/profile/sushiwaitress/images/150/profile_image_103424.jpeg)
I use the whip-and-tongue graft. I have a really sharp knife, and clippers that I wipe with alcohol between cuts. I match up the diameter of the rootstock and scion and then wrap the graft union with buddy tape. The tape is a biodegradable stretchable film, kinda waxy and breathable and soft enough that new leaves can push their way through. @terrimclaughlin

This is the area we call "the meadow" where we planted the first pawpaw trees. This was taken at 12:47 pm on 23 Oct 2023 and two of the trees are already in shade. It's partly from the time of year and partly because of a huge bittersweet vine behind me that's helping to cast such a huge shadow. I'm going to cut it down next weekend, and hopefully next summer there will be more sunlight for the pawpaws.

The KSU Atwood #pawpaw is kind of an optical illusion. The top of the tree tube is 22 inches, but the tip of the branch is pointing to 23.5 inches, even though it actually only gets to two inches below the edge of the tube. 21 Oct 2023

I dumped a wheelbarrow full of wood chips in a ring around the Susquehanna #pawpaw tree on Saturday. The chips are about 6 inches deep. There's a yardstick next to it to see what we're starting from. The top of the tube is 22 inches tall. 21 Oct 2023

Planted 3 of my #pawpaw trees this afternoon with my hubby, sisters in law, and niece. We encountered a bunch of big rocks about 6" down and the ground was really soggy and mushy from yesterday's rain. In the next few days I'll cover the landscape fabric with wood chips. 15 Oct 2023

The big leaves are a hefty #pawpaw root sucker popping up under the low branches of an evergreen and fighting for light. I'm thinking of cutting back the evergreen after all the leaves have fallen and the pawpaw is dormant so it can get more sun next season. I'll have to put up some deer deterrent though to replace what the evergreen is doing. 2 Sep 2023 #plans #observation

I sweat a lot and it wasn't comfortable, but it was sturdy enough for crawling around on my knees or sitting down on the forest floor. I'd already worn it 3-4 times and it was finally starting to rip, so I tossed it. (It came in a two pack)

I can see some green growth on all 8 of my #grafted #pawpaw -- some looks like leaves and some looks like flower buds. I learned this weekend that the green growth is in fact from energy stored in the scion. It'll be a couple more months before I can be sure the graft was successful. 4 Apr 2022 #graftyourown #newgrowth #alwayslearning #asiminatriloba

They told me it takes two weeks for the union to heal if I got enough of the cambium touching @philstalder The scion wood has been in the fridge since it was cut and now it's indoors in warm temps so I don't know if the swelling buds are because of the warm temperature or if it's a sign of healing. The buds definitely look bigger than before.

#grafting the last of my #pawpaw #seedlings -- the trick is a long shallow diagonal cut (whip graft) and matching up the green cambium layers of the rootstock and scion. Wrap tightly with biodegradable grafting tape to seal in moisture and keep in a warm location to promote faster healing. Hope it works!!! 27 Mar 2022

@sushiwaitress cam you explain the reasons for grafting them at all? I know you graft apples to bring a tired tree back to life, but what does it do for a pawpaw?
![comment comment](/profile/sushiwaitress/images/150/profile_image_103424.jpeg)
I saved seeds from pawpaws I ate and grew these small trees. Their fruit won't be the same as their parent tree, and they're unlikely to be as good as cultivated varieties. So I got wood from the cultivated varieties so I can have the best fruit. It's basically cloning. @emch
![comment comment](/profile/richard.spicer.7906/images/150/profile_image_36.jpeg)
@emch - Most apples are actually grafted to suit a desirable rootstock - if you grow them on their own roots, most will be too vigorous, or not hardy or not suitable long term. Various rootstocks have been developed to suit different end size trees and control the vigour. Similarly with pears and other fruits. Not sure about pawpaw but another reason is usually that you’ll get a fruiting tree much quicker from grafting. @sushiwaitress , what was the rootstock in your case - a straight species?
![comment comment](/profile/richard.spicer.7906/images/150/profile_image_36.jpeg)
Some rootstocks also help prevent certain diseases 👍🏼
![comment comment](/profile/sushiwaitress/images/150/profile_image_103424.jpeg)
@richard.spicer.7906 I just grew a pawpaw from seed and used the seedling tree as the rootstock. There really aren't different rootstocks for pawpaw. And you're right, grafted trees bear fruit a few years earlier than trees from seed.

Is it nessecary to overwinter them indoors? Pawpaw are quite cold hardy. They should be able to handle temps well below 0
![comment comment](/profile/referee101/images/150/profile_image_130763.jpeg)
They are decideous so will drop all their leaves and bud out in Spring
![comment comment](/profile/sushiwaitress/images/150/profile_image_103424.jpeg)
It shouldn't be necessary to overwinter them indoors, but they are in tall treepots and I'm worried the roots won't have enough insulation because they aren't planted in the ground. This is just temporary until I re-watch a video from a grower I know. @referee101
![comment comment](/profile/referee101/images/150/profile_image_130763.jpeg)
That makes sense :) we dont experience frost here at all. The lowes the temps drops might be 5 or 6 degrees celcuis ( 41 - 45 degrees farenheit.) but that rarely happens. average is around 10 in winter.

My neighbor's trees have never fruited! It's such a tragedy! I saved my seeds from pawpaws I bought last year. @referee101 I want to meet James and Tuck and visit them someday! It was their pawpaw video that got me started.
![comment comment](/profile/referee101/images/150/profile_image_130763.jpeg)
If he only have one tree then it wont set fruit. He needs 2 trees that are genetically different. Growing them from seed produces genetically different trees. If you plant your then someday his might set fruit
![comment comment](/profile/sushiwaitress/images/150/profile_image_103424.jpeg)
It's so crazy @referee101 because he has two trees that he grew from seed. They are definitely big enough to fruit AND they had buds last spring. Maybe he'll have to hand pollinate them. Being a root sucker, mine is a clone of his. But I'm going to get us some scion wood this spring and maybe in a couple more years we'll both have fruit.
![comment comment](/profile/referee101/images/150/profile_image_130763.jpeg)
I heard Paw paw can take 8 - 9 years to fruit if grown from seed.
![comment comment](/profile/sushiwaitress/images/150/profile_image_103424.jpeg)
@referee101 it's possible that's the reason. I can't remember how old his are. I'm going to graft my seedlings, which has the added benefit of making them fruit a couple years sooner.
![comment comment](/profile/referee101/images/150/profile_image_130763.jpeg)
@sushiwaitress You are lucky if you can get scions. I'm the only person in my country with paw paw seedlings atm. 😅
![comment comment](/profile/referee101/images/150/profile_image_130763.jpeg)
I forgot to mention , Bees aren't you're usual pollinators for these trees. Beetles, fly's and ant are. If you lack any of those in you're area then you might need to consider hand pollinating flowers.

Planted my two #pawpaw shoots this morning, both in the same hole. Mixed soil with peat, compost and cow manure and gave them a good soaking 27 Mar 2021 #asiminatriloba #treecrops #hopehopehope #nativeplant

OMG OMG OMG my neighbor dug up some #pawpaw suckers from his back yard and brought them over! I know to keep my expectations low because they don't often survive transplantation, but if they live, this puts me years closer to my own fruit.... #hopehopehope #asiminatriloba #wishlistnomore #freeplants #sharingiscaring #omg #bestdayever 26 Mar 2021

Oh wow I hope they do well for you.
Hubby helped me put up some #treeprotection last weekend so this doesn't happen again. 3 Oct 2024 #pawpaw #asiminatriloba 🚫🦌
