Last year an #easternpricklypear pad broke off and blew across the driveway and made its way under the fence and into the herb bed. I watched it sit there, doing nothing, so I did nothing. The top picture is 4 July. The bottom picture is today. Seems I have to do something now, because prickly doesn't belong in the herb bed. 23 July 2023 #opuntiahumifusa

I don't know @racha this is the first year it's made fruits. They are really small, and this isn't the kind that is big and sweet in the grocery stores. I have another patch of prickly pear elsewhere in my yard so I'll probably take a couple pads from this plant and put them with the other patch because it seems that they're not self-fertile. Not sure if that's really an answer.

LOOK I'M GETTING FRUITS! Last year I stuck a pad from my front yard into the pot with the #opuntiahumifusa #easternpricklypear that I got from the Philadelphia Cactus and Succulent Society, and it appears that we have achieved #cross-pollination! 12 Sep 2012

@Dragon_Warrior You know, I never considered trying them because the hispanic markets around here sell nopales, which I believe are a different variety. But I bet these are edible. If these make fruits you bet I'll be trying them.

@sushiwaitress That's cool. I was just wondering because I heard they are edible. I would love to try one sometime 😊

@Dragon_Warrior You can find prickly pear fruits (called 'tuna' in Spanish) at Hispanic markets pretty readily. There are red ones and green ones and they're worth trying. Full and I mean full of seeds, but they're quite nice when chilled, peeled, and sliced. Just don't chew too hard 😉🌵🍐

One of the blooms is pure yellow, and one has a bit of orange in the throat. They're both blooming from the same cactus pad. Wonder what's the difference. Age perhaps? Last year there was no orange in the flowers. #opuntiahumifusa #native #nativeplant #easternpricklypear 27 May 2021

I snipped the two pads off of the far-left pad and put them in the box to callous over. The big pad in the box I pulled off the patch in the front yard. I'll stick them all in this pot with the others next weekend. 18 Apr 2020 #easternpricklypear #opuntiahumifusa

I adopted these #easternpricklypear cuttings/pads at a Philadelphia Cactus and Succulent Society meeting last fall. I have them growing in my yard already but I had this empty pot by the garage so I tucked them in there. Sure enough they made it through the winter. 24 Mar 2020
