With little knowledge, I'm slowly turning an acre field into a garden! This is my first gardening attempt, so there's such a lot to learn! 🐝🦋🌻

When we moved here two bay trees had been planted at the top of the field. One seems to now be more than double the size of the other even though they are a couple of meters apart! Any ideas why please gardeners?

Don't be frightened to chop it back a bit and use in cooking the flavour is fab!

@SylviaDavies found it! Weird, perhaps try what's been suggested ie prune the shorter one and it may encourage it to grow(as with roses) I know it's strange but I remember it took my bay tree around 3 years to get going so I daren't pick it- as soon as I did there was no stopping it! I had this for 11 years but sadly couldn't be saved due to building work and it was into the way 😓 I have 2 standards in pots now but I think they're much better in the ground. I assume leaves lk healthy and green

Thanks @titchyfra and @wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom ! May just try that! Any particular time of year?

If it's not flowering at the moment I would say any time now - unless your expecting frost! Otherwise wait for flowers to fade. good luck @SylviaDavies I was going to say they apparently don't like winds but if the other is OK seems odd to say that really!

Thanks @titchyfra, just a bit puzzled! Dingy think I've seen flowers yet! ? They are if anything in the windiest part of the garden but the big one if anything shelters the other. Thanks! Appreciate your advice! 😃

@Sylvia Davies regarding the Bay Tree, I chop mine back any time in growing season it always bounces back.🌿

Don't be afraid to prune either bush. You'll have so many bay leaves you'll be giving them away to family and friends!!
