One of a number of bay trees we have, but my question is regarding the new growth at the foot of the tree, should we keep aggressively cutting it back or should we try and shape it? I’m hearing conflicting views! 🤯 #bay

If it was my bay tree I would remove all the bottom growth but it might be fun to shape it and make a feature of it. Personal choice, really. 👍

Hi Tom , welcome to GTags 👍🏻..Looking at that I think I would make a feature, as Barbara said it’s personal preference @jacaranda

OK thank you both! I wasn’t sure if the younger shoots at the foot would be taking nutrients etc away from the main tree? Or can they coexist happily? If so I’ll try and shape them into a ball at the bottom! ✂️

A tip when replying, Tom, you need to tag people so that they see your reply. Julie tagged me in her comment so I’ll tag her so that she sees what you have said 👍 @juliesgarden

I would take the bottom shoots out too as they can be quite invasive.

If it was mine I'd cut it out but that's just my preference 👍

Thank you all @juliesgarden , @jacaranda , @charlotte and @pelly ! I think we’re better off taking out the bottom shoots! I’ll get onto it! 💪🏼

Welcome to GardenTags and welcome to your new garden. It reminds me so much of the garden I grew up in. It had two lollipop trees (box rather than bay) with steps in between leading onto the lawn. They were under planted with aubretia 💜

PS I have a lollipop bay and once you have removed the lower growth, in future you’ll be able to just rub them off as they appear

I would definitely remove the base growth Tom 👍😊

You’ve preempted my next question @awomanonabike and that was suggestions for under planting? 😂 I’ll check out Aubretia
