First butterfly I've seen in my garden this summer, feeding on one of my lovely dahlias. #dahlia #dahlias #yellow #butterfly #lovely #pollen #pollenators #summer #earlysummer #yellowdahlia

@treefrog44 , I gotta start remembering the names of the butterflies I have seen already or carry my guide with me. I know I should know this one. Help please!🤗

#cabbagewhitebutterfly @purplebird

I saw a beautiful black one in the garden this morning. It didn't land long enough for me to snap a photo. #goals

@treefrog44 is that a female then?🤗

Can't tell for sure @purplebird ...looks like one spot, that's a male. Females have 2

Zinnias and verbena are popular nectar sources for butterflies! I saw you had them on your plant list, you should be seeing more butterflies, the black one you saw was most likely a black eastern swallowtail, if you plant dill, parsley, or rue,( they are herbs), but also host plants for the swallowtails

@purplebird @treefrog44 In that case, I just saw a female. It was larger. So funny @treefrog44 , my son asked to buy dill last night. Lol. I told him no, bc we aren't making pickles this year but maybe I should reconsider!

@treefrog44 let my husband go off with the butterfly book. Thanks.🤗

You should! The caterpillars are so neat to watch, they go through 5 different phases... it's about a month and a half from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly...I have pictures of some I had this spring in my garden on my garden board if you would like to check it out! :)

I will look! I have had caterpillars/ butterflies in my classroom before for my students to observe. Always a fun little project. :)
This beauty was hiding under the bottom leaves of the plant. #dahlia #hiding
So pretty - no need to be so #shy
