Very lush
Coming on we’ll 💚💚💚
Stunning ferns......I sooooo want one
@OldMansBeard they dont dissapoint emma. Plenty of water, and the rewards are great.
What about winter care dave @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co
@OldMansBeard their a lot hardier than people think emma. They only need the crown and part of the trunk fleecing, and their fine.

Tree ferns are well on the way now 🤗🤗🤗
Beautiful! Mines just starting to unfurl 😄
Wow that grown Dave it’s beautiful 🤗

Another #wetday and lots of #newgrowth around the garden.
I'm adding this to my wishlist even though I can never probably grow one. Just love them so much. #primitive #maybesomeday
Looking really good I’d love one 🤗

#newgrowth starting early this year.
This coveted plant will have to stay on my #wishlist
@emch are you in the wrong zone eileen ?
Can’t wait for my 5ft one to arrive in a couple of weeks Dave! I’ll be coming to you for advice 😌
@hayleyaj just keep throwing water on it. Bucket fulls 😂
Could I ask please.....I bought my first fern last year. All the leaves have gone limp and flattened to the ground. Should these old leaves be removed? From your post I’m presuming new fronds should eventually grow? (Mine’s not a tree fern though, just a fairly standard fern)
@italydiva cut them off angela, the new fronds will start to grow within the next few weeks. Ps im no expert though 🤦♂️
Great, thanks Dave. I’m sure you know a lot more than me! It will certainly help tidy up the area too...it looks like a herd of elephants has trampled all over it!!! 😆

@johninbrighton morning john. It does look good.
Too cool looking!

This is the trunk of one of my tree ferns. Quickly becoming home to lots of little ferns.
Ive never seen that happen . You must be taking very good care of your tree ferns 🌴🌴
@london its only doing it on the one deborah 🤔 no idea why.
That’s so cute 💚💚
- Early Summer 2020
- 39
Both new this year, and both doing brilliantly.
@davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co have you started stacking plants on top of each other now for more space😜
@Lottie__O you'll be doing it soon as well 😄
@davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co I've already been thinking about it🤣🤦♀️ no garden spending for a while now🤐
So lush 💚💚💚
When I look at these Dave I'm so tempted to get one but not sure they would over winter in my damp summerhouse as it gets very little light in there 😯
@keely their a lot hardier than many think keely. Its been down to -8 here on the odd occasion and they seem ok with it. Just wrap them well.
Thanks Dave did you get yours from crocus? I'm refiguring back hot bed next year so def have space for it 😊
@Keely seagrave nurseries keely. If you wait until xmas time their 30%off. I pay £70.00 for them.
Thanks Dave worth that they really make a statement in your garden 😄

Looks like your in tropics 💚😍
Morning Dave. Gosh it looks so good ....rain forecast here a bit later. Have a good one 👋😮👌
@keely not much chance of that keely, so this'll have to do this year.
Morning Dave, no sun lounger under the palm tree for you today then ☔️☔️☔️
@pelly Nooo chance jane.
That doesn't look like Shropshire! 😃 💚💚💚 🌴🌿🍹

New this spring. The bottom one is looking promising 🤗.
Wonder if I’ve got room for one...🤔
@wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom everyone has room for one elaine, you wont regret it 🤗
Do they like full sun....although they limp enough in forests don’t they...
@wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom the two by my pond get a lot of sun elaine, and up to now their ok. They need to be kept well watered though. A good rule for watering. A foot of trunk=1 gallon a day. 3ft = 3 gallon. When its dry.

Coming along nicely upto now. These two are in full sun this year, so keeping a close eye on them.
Very impressive
@solly 🤞🤞🤞 mark, they will be ok. Their getting plenty of water so time will tell.
Wow they look spectacular 💚💚💚
Very stately! 💚💚
They look brilliant
@nojo920 they should be great when their out properly noel, as long as they cope with the sun ok. A bit of trial and error really.
They look very stately, magnificent pair!
How long have you had them for? Do you cover them up for winter??? How big were they when you got them? I absolutely love them💚🌴
@belindah the one one the right is in its 4th year belindah, i get them as a 3ft trunk from #seagravenurseries for around £80.00 you can see where they were at growth wise from where the fronds are starting to form the trunk. I wrap them up in winter, straw in the crown and fleece around. Their a lot hardier than people think, but i just go on the cautious side.
Ah thanks. Yes buying them smaller makes it a lot more affordable, as long as you're willing to be patient! I've got 2 (relative babies to yours!) Which only have the beginnings of a trunk so far. I got one last year at Hampton Court flower show and the other the year before (around just £15 each but a long long way to go till they get to your two's size!) I think I may have to treat myself to a 3 foot one in the near future! 😊💚🌴👍

Plenty going on with the tree ferns at the moment.🤗
I find them a bit scary. 😲😲😲 like a monster. Is our Frank ok ? Given him a hair cut yet ? I trimmed Mr F - not entirely successful 😂
@Charlotte franks fine Charlotte thanks. He's not due a trim for another month, so might just get through ok. Poor Mr F. I wont let my wife near me with the clippers, she's Brutal.
It's when I collapsed on the floor laughing uncontrollably that Mr F worried !!.
Impressive
🤔they're a bit like a fat hairy tarantula🕷😨😳🙈 when unfurling @charlotte 😆
Exactly @cee 😱😱😱

👊👊👊 looking promising this year.
Very promising. I didn't cut the old fronds off mine last year, it's still looking good 😉
@vec when we were in Cornwall last summer, there was a garden there that left them on, they looked good, the old and the new. They go black here, so not so good .
I've got tinges of dark colour on mine but not too bad, hoping leaving them on will open up the crown a bit for the new ones
Super photo 👍👍

@DeborahBanks this is my small fern which is kept inside Deborah. Although frost free, the fronds are going black now. Hope this helps.
Yes, my definitely looks more dead than black. It has new growth so hopefully it stays alive until spring. I think next year I'm going to wrap it and leave it out. 😬

Great deal for existing customers at #seagravenurseries just got another two 3ft tree ferns for £159.00.🤗🤗🤗🌴🌴🌴
These are so pretty! You do them so well!
@lesliecole49 ive got a bit of an obsession with them leslie. Ive got these new ones to go around the pond.🤗
Is that cheap then .....😯
@wagsmomthompsonbtinternetcom very elaine 😁
It looks so vibrant but a bit out of my budget - have to wait till they start stocking them in Lidl’s 🤣🤣🤣
@sharonhayden my wife got my a small one from B&Q which has done well. Their a bit cheaper.
I’ll have a look - saw amazing ones in New Zealand so am interested in them
Then well done..👍🏼
- Mid Autumn 2019
- 35
At least something enjoys a good soaking 🌧🌧🌧
Still look good, when are you going to wrap them for winter?
💚💚💚
@lilybee their stuffed with straw already sue, and fleeced the top, once the fronds start turning black, ill cut them back and cover properly. I think their a lot hardier than people think .
I've wrapped mine the last two years as it was new. Will probably do the same this year but we don't get extremes of weather here so it would probably be ok if I didn't wrap it but I don't want to take that chance!
@lilybee better safe than sorry sue. I overwrap mine i think.
Quite impressive.....🌿

Looking so healthy Dave 🌴🌴
@pelly the fern was new this spring jane, its a bit stumpier than the others. The fronds are shorter for some reason.
It still looks good to me, but I know nothing about them. I'd love to have one but I just don't know where one would go in my garden 💚🤔
@pelly you've got room in the front now 🤗
Good point 👍👍
So lush 💚💚

Couldnt be more pkeased with this little tiddler .
@davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co. Do you keep them in pots until they're a certain size? I've noticed you have them planted out too. I've bought one but smaller than this.
Ive got 3 with 3ft trunks in the ground, and another 3ftr in a pot, just to give it a bit more height. The little one, my wife got me for my birthday from b&q, and to be fair is doing brilliantly. Their easily moved around the little ones, the 3ftrs are heavy to move. I think possibly their better in the ground, if only to get the root system a bit better.
@davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co should I plant it and then cover it in winter?
If your happy where it is, then yes. Just put plenty of fleece or straw in the crown, to keep the frost out, and it should be ok. Their more hardier than people think.
Thank you lots @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co I shall stop picking your brains and get it planted out 😊
- Early Summer 2019

Morning all. Im really pleased with how this little tree fern has come on, in just 6 weeks. From B&Q aswell 😊

@lilybee i found a great difference the second year sue, once i started feeding them. Ive got 18 fronds on the one this year, 15 on the other.

Just took delivery of my tree fern feed, and my wife just said Why are you buying that, the way those things grow !!! My obvious reply. Why do you think they grow so well.🙄
Bought some of this based on your recommendation so hoping my little tree fern gets bigger this year! 🌴
@lilybee it certainly wont do them any harm sue, mine were great last year.

Just uncovered my tree ferns, and all seems well. Plenty of new fronds ready to burst into life. Theyll be covered at night, for a good while yet.
I spy knuckles 💚
@vec they all seem ready to get going julie, must be the warm weather, ill have to be careful at night with them, or jack frost might get them 😨
Plenty of new growth there 👍👍
It’s like a big hairy ********😆
That scared me. Thought it was a spider 😲
I've got mine stuffed with fleece rather than straw and I've folded the browned fronds into it for a bit of extra protection but I did give it a good couple of soaks last week. I read somewhere that more die from lack of watering than frost damage
@vec thanks julie. Its given it wet and mild for the next few days, so thought id let them get a good soaking.

@mariomartins this is what ive done in the top to protect from the frost, any #advice is welcome.
Very useful advice.Thanks @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co @debrascott 👏🏼👏🏼
#advice #tasmanian-tree-fern #tasmaniantreefern #fern #dicksonia #dicksoniaantarctica #dicksonia-antarctica #frost
@davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co yes I do the straw aswell but I wrap the top all together with the straw inside. ... not the trunk
That's how I do it @debrascott 👍😊

All wrapped up for winter ❄❄❄
hi @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co I always wrap the other end to protect the new buds I never seen or heard about the way you doing to yours
@mariomartins i just went on youtube, and followed what they adviced on there. They got through last winter ok, so im just sticking to what worked last winter. I cut the fronds off once they turn black, and then put some more fleece around then.
@davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co @debrascott gave a tip on the other pic and that's how I do it. ... otherwise the frost will kill the new buds and will root the trunk from the top. .. that's the fragile and delicate part of the #tasmanian-tree-fern 😊👍

Do feed your tree ferns Dave and do you protect them in winter? @davewrightjoinerygooglemail.co
@lilybee these are in their second year sue, so they get fed weekly, from april onwards, with a tree fern feed. I wrap them well, in the winter, with straw and fleece. It got cold last winter, so was glad i did.
Thanks Dave, think I need to feed my small one more regularly. Wrapped mine last year too - relatives in New Zealand found that hilarious!

Just in case you missed it yesterday #fronds 🤗
Really nice Dave. 1 of my clients got theirs delivered with a really good liquid tree fern feed. If you dont already have some I'd recommend it 👍
@broughgardens I've read about that, but some say not to feed the first year, is it best to feed straight away ?
Good question. This particular client got 3 trees. 8 10 and 12 foot tall I think because they are mature it was suggested by the suppliers to feed them up right away
Love mother nature it's a masterpiece ❤❤❤❤
I have just brought a 3ft one and the nursery advised me not to feed until next year 😊
@tmwignall that's the same advice I've had so ill wait until next year I think.
I like the #progress 📷. #advice
