Lithops seedlings, plus a random piece of grass that started growing.
12/24 - yearly update for these guys. Sown 2 years ago. #lithops #succulets #succulent #mesembs
Cute. Bravo! Growing these require much patience.
Looks good 🌞
@columbiariver these guys are definitely the most tricky plant I've ever grown, but that's also what makes them so fun for me! Sometimes when they split in the fall, they will grow two new heads (which I believe is what you mean by pups?). As long as they are kept in a cool location so they can go into dormancy, they do just fine. I've found that if they aren't kept in a location colder than 65°F/18°C at night, they don't do well in the fall and winter.
@columbiariver this is because in order for the stomata to open, it must reach a certain low temperature. The stomata are cells that open during the cooler nights to absorb carbon dioxide. Lithops depend on CAM photosynthesis in order to survive the small amounts of water they receive in the wild-- this is especially true when dormant. Without being able to properly open the stomata to photosynthesize, they dry up.
