I want to put up my living stones do I need cacti compost with grit or can I just use a very fine grit growing medium from IKEA?
@lydiastirling go with the fine grit growing medium from Ikea. You can mix in 10% cactus soil if you want, but bake it first to kill bug eggs.

@kylers it's hard to tell from this photo, but this guy is only about 10mm wide. He's a seedling that's only about 18 months old. Young plants like this can't go without water as long as older ones, so I was watering him a wee bit earlier than I would a older bigger plant.

How long does it take for these to sprout once you plant them Ruth?
@kimguy Hi Kim, the seeds are like dust and they take only about 4-10 days to germinate, but they grow suuuuuuuper slowly. The ones in this photo were sown in October 2017, and they're still only about the size of a pencil eraser.

Another little guy starting to change leaves. He's 14 months old and he hasn't yet finished absorbing the moisture from the last pair. This is called "stacking" and it's my fault for watering him before he finished absorbing the old leaves. Time to exert some willpower and not water him till that splitting pair is crispy.

Lithops seedlings are TOUGH. They WANT TO LIVE. The big ones grab your eye, but notice the two tiny ones: they got sunburned early on, and I kept expecting them to dry up and die. But they kept.... not... dying. They haven't grown as fast, and who knows what they'll do in the next 8 months, but I find it kind of fascinating that they haven't given up.

I'm curious, approximately how many mature lithops and seedlings do you have?
@erino I counted 34 "mature" plants (e.g. I bought them from somewhere) still alive. I've killed 6 so far. As for seedlings, I have no idea how many individual seedlings I have, but I have 3 pots of mixed seeds and 11 single-species pots of seedlings.
That is pretty cool, you have so many =) I have 30 that were brought, only 7 have names the rest I haven't tried to id, you have way more seedlings than me, but I have recently found a site that will send seed to NZ with the right paperwork. I have killed one so far.... watching another currently as it was splitting then suddenly the old leaves shriveled up leaving a tiny little plant compared to what it was.
@erino I've had that happen too -- the new baby leaves come in a lot smaller than the old ones. Sometimes if the grower used fertilizer to make the plant grow big quickly, the next set of leaves comes in small as the plant tries to recover from the stress.

The ones in this photo I grew from a mix of seeds I got from #mesagarden in the USA. OzLithops.com is local to you so I'd recommend their mix. They're one of the best sources in the world for lithops seeds. I've bought lithops plants from MesaGarden and a couple other USA-based suppliers, but I've never ordered plants from abroad before. People do do it successfully though. If I were in Australia, I'd give OzLithops.com all my business. I've heard great recommendations about them. @plants

5 July 2018 I'm so proud of my little red guy -- he's almost done absorbing his first pair of true leaves. He's about 9 months old now and 6mm wide on the long side, planted in late Sept 2017. An experienced grower friend recommended that I transplant these seedlings into larger pots now so they can grow faster, so I ordered more pumice and some turface and I'm going to give it a shot in the next few days. Some of them are still so small... hope they survive... I've put a lot of love into them.

I have a question for you @sushiwaitress ive only resently got some living stones and while they came with a leaflet im not sure how often i should water them now that i am watering them?
@PunkyKy @lydiastirling Watering depends on the age of the plant. The ones in the photo are only about 7.5 months old and aren't adults yet, so I water them every 3-5 days, even if they are splitting. The old leaves take a lot longer to shrivel, but for juvenile plants that's what I do. For adults, I'm a lot less certain. I wait for the adults to start wrinkling. Sometimes I give a squirt or 2 of water to an individual adult plant.
@lydiastirling How did the roots of your plant look when you got it? If they're not very developed (often a bunch of roots die when shipped bare root) then you might give them a tablespoon of water every week to help roots develop. Frequency of watering depends on what soil they're in and how humid your climate is. You may have to experiment (and kill a few) before you get the hang of it. I've already had 4 die on me due to underwatering, so it's not very straightforward.
Thank you @sushiwaitress i brought them from a specalist nersery at RHS (royal horticulteral socity) show in cardiff they are in pots with a sutible compost. 2 of them are splitting but the 3rd one isnt but its a lot bigger than the other 2. Would watering them once the soil is compleatly dry the same as i do for my cacti work? I think the 2 that have split are possibly younger than the other one so will do as you say with 3-5 days. Thank you so much for your advice its very much apprecated.
@lydiastirling only do 3-5 days of they're less than 18 months old. I'd start out with every 2-3 weeks, but only after they're done splitting and reabsorbing the old leaves.

@pixierose They're fairly easy I guess. I definitely killed a few batches before I got the hang of the soil, water, and light needs. I ordered a pack of 500 mixed species seeds so I could afford to fail a few times. There are a couple pictures of my windowsill setups if you dig through my garden photos.
I mist them morning and evening untill the first leaf change (4-5 months) and since then I've been watering every 3-5 days.

What are signs that you watch for when it comes to not watering them as much as when they're new seedlings? Also do you keep the newly sown seeds on a heat mat of some sort and how moist do you keep them (if they were to get morning natural sunlight here in north california)?
@nicole_succs Before their first leaf change, I sprayed them about 15-20 sprays morning and evening and kept them damp pretty much constantly. My soil mix also has about equal parts coco coir, vermiculite, and pumice, so it holds more water than would be good for an adult plant. After the first leaf change I started watering them every 3-4 days. I didn't use a heat mat. They live inside on my windowsill. One thing I learned the hard way: the seedlings cannot take direct sunlight.
@nicole_succs Direct sunlight will burn the seedlings and their chlorophyll will be destroyed and their green color will fade. I taped the thinnest layer of a Kleenex to my windowpane and that has worked beautifully. I've also tried with paper towel and I think that might be too thick. I also have a cheapie grow light from Amazon.

Where did you buy your seeds for these? No idea who to trust for seeds.
I got these from Mesa Garden. It's just their mix of random lithops seeds. I'm extremely happy with it. Lots of variety. www.mesagarden.com The seedlings are about 6 months old now, so their colors and variety are really starting to shine. They were just all green for the first 3-4 months.
I also got some great seeds from American Hedgehog Nursery -- a great majority of the seeds germinated, which is more than I can say about two other sellers I tried. I've only gone with USA-based suppliers so far just so I can avoid international shipping hassles, but I've also heard great things about conos-paradise and OzLithops.

This bigboy is I think a casualty of my over watering. He was the first to germinate and had always been the biggest and fattest #lithops #seedling but he is going to be the last one to hatch. If it ever happens. I think the baby leaves inside are just not strong enough to push out of the tough outer leaves. I'm hoping a dry spell will help him.

In order to help the #lithops #seedling at the top of this photo to hatch, I started withholding water. Until this week, I'd been spraying my seedlings daily, sometimes twice daily, with 10-15 sprays of rainwater. The #seedlings got nice and plump, but I noticed it was taking a lot longer than I expected for Mr. Chia Seed to emerge. I concluded that I was watering too much, and the outer leaves were growing or stretching, which never gave the inner leaves any reason to emerge.
So I stopped watering and POP out he came AND the old outer leaves shrank around the body of the plant like they're supposed to. #lithopsleslieivventeri #growyourown #gyo #fromseed #mesagarden

Ok the more I look at it, the bottom "lithops" in this picture doesn't really look much like a lithops at all. I thought that it was just injured because it grew next to a piece of pumice and maybe got scraped open and I assumed that's why he grew out the side. But now I'm wondering if he's even a lithops at all, because none of the other seedlings look like this. #plantid could it be a conophytum?
