Recently moved to a new house near Hertford, taking on a big garden renovation project... As well as a new allotment!

Help me identify this plant. It was a tuber from my mum's garden, I put in the ground 4 or 5 months ago, it shot up almost immediately.

Is it an acanthus?

Certainly looks like it 😳 word of warning, it's really invasive and very difficult to get rid of once established. Still fighting to get rid of one I dug up two years ago because it was attempting to take over the garden and there's still new shoots being thrown up now which I have to dig down in some cases about three feet to find the root...

Uh-oh thanks for the heads up @justin. I better get to work digging it up this week. I've got a big empty pot I'll try it in.

I agree it's Acanthus -A. mollis to be exact. As well as trying to dig up the roots keep an eye out for any seedlings before they get too established. It's an impressive plant though.

Acanthus Mollis is very hardy. Good for dry and difficult spots where you can keep it contained.

Ooh @brightcolours would it grow under fir trees do you think?? 😃😃

@fuschia Certainly worth a try! It transplants readily, if you know anyone who has some.

If you are putting it under for trees dig in loads of organic matter.... The trees will have zapped all the nutrients and moisture so you need to replenish it. Acanthus ( Bears Breaches) is a stunning plant. Good choice. :)
