Hydrangea petiolaris syn. Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris

Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris. The climbing hydrangea. Perfect for a shady fence or wall. A bit slow to get started but it will eventually romp along a wall or fence, clinging by aerial, adventitious roots.

Would you consider the roots to be as damaging as ivy? @mikethegardener

I can't wait for mine to get going @mikethegardener #impatient and can't see much self clinging either although it does have buds on this year and didn't last year

Do you think this would grow over an arbour, under a fairly thick tree canopy in a woodland? There is only light there when the trees have no leaves.

@slj @titchyfra @rusty hi there, to answer the following points. Probably too shady to grow under a tree as needs some light. Roots aren't known to be as troublesome as ivy roots, but they are slow to cling, but once new growth appears the clinging/adventitious roots will appear. Good luck all😊😊

@mikethegardener I have one in the back garden that was here when we moved in. It's too far from the fence and so does not climb! I'd like to move it to the front garden. We've been here over 10 years and so I've no idea actually how old the plant is. Do you think I can move it?
